However, the two main qualities you should look out for in standard perfect GPS military piece is the durability and tactical features.

Your selection for the best GPS watch for military depends on what you need it for. Notwithstanding, our top choice for this review is Garmin Tactix Charlie.

Garmin Tactix Charlie – Best GPS Watch for Military

When you hear Garmin, the first thought on your mind should be GPS. Their proficiency with GPS has made them one of the leading brands of tactical watches. Garmin Tactix Charlie is a sophisticated GPS watch for soldiers and other tactical enthusiasts. It offers excellent durability and functionality.

Benefits / Drawbacks – Garmin Tactix Charlie

There are so many reasons to choose Garmin Tactix Charlie as the best GPS watch for military. Here are some of them.

Incredibly Durable

Beginning from the casing to the stainless steel bezel, the durability of this watch is next to none. Attached to the housing are the silicon strap and Sapphire glass lens for utmost durability and abrasion resistance. With the vast selection of numerous silicone and nylon straps from Garmin, the Tactix Charlie is compatible with Garmin’s QuickFit system. This means you easily make quick strap changes.

Awesome Navigator

As expected from the best GPS watch for military, the Garmin Tactix Charlie has a built-in GPS that supports GLONASS and other useful tactical features. These qualities equip the device to show coordinates of your current position in the MGRS format. It supports navigation by aiding you with directions to target or pre-planned routes.

With the built-in GPS, the watch tracks your activities and takes an in-depth record of data about each event. You can synchronize your smartphone via Bluetooth to access this information using the Garmin Connect web or mobile app. To improve the watch’s performance, Garmin releases regular software updates.

Tactical Features

The tactical mood of the watch displays your map, coordinates, and other useful information you need for patrolling, swimming, running, or hunting. Believe it or not, there is an advanced tactical feature called the jumpmaster mode for parachuting. After the jump, it navigates you to the target landing zone.

Furthermore, the watch is a writs-based heart rate monitor, a compass, altimeter, barometer, thermometer, calendar, and so much more. It also shows information about the moon and the sun.

Suunto Traverse Alpha

Suunto Transverse is another trusted watch with excellent military features. Garmin Tactix may as well be the best GPS watch for military; however, Suunto Traverse Alpha is a fair contender. It offers incredible tactical features and superb durability. The case of the timepiece is of durable composite material attached to a stainless-steel bezel. It has a water repellent textile strap for extra comfort and durability.

Benefits / Drawbacks – Suunto Traverse Alpha

The watch offers several advanced features that may come handy during tactical activities or hunting. Let’s see some benefits.

Awesome Navigator

Again the watch features a well built-in GPS that also supports GLONASS. After setting up your routes and waypoint, the Suunto Traverse navigates by showing your location in relation to the set direction. This is very helpful during activities like hunting and patrolling.

The watch supports MGRS (Military Grid Reference System) used by NATO armed forces and can instantly show coordinates of your current location. If you want, you can import routes and waypoints in several formats such as GPX, KLM, and lots more. The automatic shot detection is another delightful feature that makes the watch detect when a shot is fired and creates waypoints to the coordinates.

Easy to use

With GPS, you can track your activities to access detailed information about each one, such as distance, duration, speed, and maps. This information is viewable via the Suunto Movescount app, which is available as a web and mobile app. However, you need to synchronize and pair the watch with your smartphone to access these details. When it is connected, you can change the settings of your watch from your smartphone and view notifications like messages and incoming calls from your watch.

Impressive Features

The Suunto Traverse is another one of the best GPS watches to offer more than enough features to please every tactical watch enthusiast. There are additional features like compass, barometer, thermometer, altimeter, moon phase, calendar, sunrise/sunset alarm, moonrise/moonset alarm, water pressure resistance to 330 feet, and a backlight compatible with night vision goggles. Also, there are displays of real-time GPS information like current speed, distance, etc.

Garmin Fenix 5X Plus

Garmin Fenix 5X Plus is another GPS watch for military you should consider. It comes with some mind-blowing features. Although there are incredibly impressive predecessors of this watch, Garmin Fenix 5X Plus comes with some goodies that the previous Fenix models may lack.

The Garmin Fenix 5X Plus is the best Military smartwatch in today’s market. With consistent upgrades, it keeps getting better. This even makes the watch more exciting.

Benefits / Drawbacks – Garmin Fenix 5X Plus

Garmin Fenix 5X Plus is a GPS watch for military; you should check it out one day.

Well-designed and comfortable

The Garmin Fenix 5X Plus has a rugged design fit for adventures. It comes with a durable scratch resistant doom sapphire crystal and black band to smoothly fit the wrist. The stainless steel or diamond-like carbon titanium bezel and casing contribute to the ruggedness of the watch.

The look is a bit chunky, but this only adds to the style and presents the wear with more confidence. Surprisingly, the bulky appearance and size don’t hinder the watch from being comfortable and allowing free movements while you engage in physical activities.

Multipurpose Timepiece

Not only for soldiers, but Fenix 5X Plus is also an excellent choice for training during sports activities. If you are into trekking, triathlon, and other outdoor activities, this watch will be your best buddy!

The Garmin Fenix 5X Plus has features like the advanced GPS, heart rate monitor, Wi-Fi, rechargeable battery, Chroma display, calorie and step counter, an altimeter, and color topographical maps, and thermometer. It is water-resistant to 100 meters.

Incredible features

Amidst other impressive features, it also comes with a pulse oximeter for oxygen saturation. As a non-medical device, the watch proves useful by providing awareness of your estimated blood oxygen saturated level, especially while your body adjusts to higher altitudes.

In areas where there are extreme weather changes, the watch has a storm alarm to detect drops in barometric pressures. The built-in music storage, Galileo-based navigation system, and Garmin Pay are some other highlights of this excellent watch.

General Criteria in Selecting the Best GPS Watch for Military

Just as we have mentioned, the two main focus when getting this watch is the durability and tactical features. But there is more.

GPS features

Your timepiece should synchronize your current location accurately and within a short time. Some GPS watches take forever to load. However, a proper GPS function should trace steps, save routes, navigation plans, save tracks and waypoints

Ruggedness

Military watches have a reputation for durability. They should be rugged and shockproof to beats, knocks, or abrasion. From the glass to the case and band, the entire watch must be resilient.

Tactical Features

The standard military watch should have a compass, altimeter, and barometer features. These features allow the timepiece to serve navigation and prediction purposes better.

Battery Life

A reliable GPS military watch should operate for at least a year without needing a battery change. The GPS watch you choose should run on lithium-based batteries and must have battery life capable of running for days without needing recharging.

Design

To be honest, the main thing most people want to see in any gadget is the design. While most military watches stick to natural colors like black, brown, white, silver, camo or green, some others have changeable bands. You can decide to give yours a sleek outdoorsy look.

Benefits / Drawbacks – Garmin Fenix 5 Plus

We like to see the Garmin Fenix as the watch you wear on a suit for a day job and also for a weekend on the mountains. Check out the features.

Great Design

Compared to the previous version of the Fenix 5 smartwatch, the refreshed Fenix 5 Plus rocks the spotlight on military smartwatches. Although, it retains both the classical look and toughness as the predecessor; the key upgrades come in terms of the hardware and software properties.

The Fenix comes in a variety of colors with personalized options making the design suitable for both men and women. Even with the efficiency of the Fenix watch, the display is quite small. That’s not still a problem since it only makes smartwatch comfortable on female’s wrists as well as men.

Impressive Features

The biggest turn up of the Fenix 5 Plus remains the features. It’s got almost everything including the rugged outdoorsy orient waterproof quality, optical heart rate monitor, great battery life and decent display. With the Plus version, there’s the bonus of a Galileo app, Garmin pay, color topographical maps, and better navigation performance.

Complete with workout stats and activity profiles, you will hardly want this bad boy off your writ. The GPS and satellite reception, barometric altimeter, gyroscope, and 3-axis compass keeps you in contact with your team at all times.

Quite Pricey

There is no escape from the fact the military smartwatches make the most versatile timepieces. So whether you’re a swimmer or a runner, it’s water-resistant and lightweight and can also make the list as one of the best outdoor smartwatch models on the market. But beware, the Garmin Fenix smartwatch may be a little bit too pricey though.

As a refreshed version of the Garmin Fenix 5 smartwatch, the Fenix 5 brings everything to your wrist. Including impressive features and outstanding quality. Asides from its expensive effect, the smartwatch presents a clear difference with its attractiveness and ability to fit all outfits. If you still think it’s too costly, you can check out our list of the best military watches under 200.

Other Picks

After our review of most of the highest-rated military smartwatches, Garmin Fenix 5 Plus might be your best choice for a full-featured military smartwatch. It’s still fair if this timepiece doesn’t precisely meet all your needs yet. There are also other interesting military smartwatches that we’ll like to discuss like Garmin Instinct and Casio Pro-Trek.

Garmin Instinct – Most Durable Military Smartwatch

According to the U.S military standards, the construct of the Garmin Instinct identifies one of the most durable smartwatches around. If you want something close to an indestructible piece, get this one. It’s shock, heat, and water resistance up to 100 meters. Available in three colors with lots of specs, it’s our top choice for the most durable military smartwatch.

Just like the previous Garmin on our list, the Instinct features GPA, GLONASS, and Galileo. Supported by the constantly working multiple global satellite systems, you never have to worry about losing your way. Plus, this military-grade piece has more to offer, including a barometric altimeter, 3-axis compass, and a TracBack assist to help you retrace your steps.

Benefits / Drawbacks – Garmin Instinct

With excellent visibility on both sunny and rainy days, responsive menus, recessed buttons, don’t expect too many flaws from the Instinct. Continue reading to see other features

Ruggedly Built

The pretty robust and military-like look of the Garmin Instinct seems to be a spec on its own. In terms of software, it offers excellent users experience, as well as being suitable for outdoor sports. If you want a Military G-shock version of a smartwatch, look no further than this Garmin product. It’s built to be comfortable in a lightweight design. Able to withstand the harshest environments, the watch is perfect for running, biking, hiking, hunting, and other exercising adventures.

Standard Military Functions

As a standard military smartwatch, it features an accurate altimeter, barometer, heart rate monitor, and a functioning GPS. Some additions are the TracBcak assist, elevation profile, easy access minimaps, distance to destination display, and a built-in magnetic compass. Plus, you can only find this much qualities on a few models of smartwatch.

The 16-hour battery life and 14-day battery in standby mode relieve you from having to need a charger all the time. You can stay active anywhere and at any time with preloaded activities to monitor your heart rate and stress level.

Missing features

The watch represents an all-round improvement of smartwatches. But as expected, it comes with a few downsides. The Garmin Instinct does not have music storage, colored topographic maps, and connect IQ to install apps and new watch themes. Also, it’s not the best to track fitness, and the battery life seems to be unreliable when GPS is enabled. Although even with these missing feature, this Garmin piece remains one of the best military smartwatch you can find.

Casio Pro Trek Resin GPS – Best GPS Military Smartwatch

As expected, all watches have their most appealing qualities. For the Casio Pro Trek, it’s the best military smartwatch when it comes to GPS connectivity. Although it’s not as rugged as the Garmins mentioned above, it’s still a very reliable piece. Don’t get me wrong; the Casio Pro Trek is also durable and tactical. It accomplishes the perfect balance between functionality and toughness. The Casio Pro Trek will likely be the next generation of tactical Smartwatch.

With this, you can expect a long list of attractive functions, including an android compatible GPS connectivity device, dual-layer LCD, MIL-STD 810g compliance durability. Plus, activity trackers and 25 hours of battery life at maximum utilization. What else do you want from a smartwatch?

Benefits / Drawbacks – Casio Pro Trek Resin

Rated perfect for navigation and extreme tactical functions, the Casio Pro Trek is a titan on the wrist. Like the others, let’s talk about some features.

Quality in a Sleek Design

There could be better-looking watches, but the Casio Pro Trek Resin is arguably the best looking military smartwatch. It comes in two color versions – orange and black. Compared to its predecessors, it’s more robust and ruggedly designed.

More than just a time-reminder, the monochrome display shows atmospheric pressure or altitude, compass bearing, and more. Providing useful information on outdoor activities at a glance and befitting the Casio Pro Trek Resin as an effective military gear. Map reading requires analysis in finer details. Fortunately, this Casio smartwatch employs an organic EL view in a dual-layer – both monochrome and color display.

Remarkable GPS connectivity

With the addition of the new smart technologies and GPS functionality, the Casio Pro Trek Resin is a significant improvement on the Casio brand. You can record the paths you moved whole hiking, cycling, trekking, and kayaking and so on.

No matter where you are, the smartwatch keeps you connected to the google maps with both GPS and GLONASS compatibility. It adopts a low-power GPS and a full-color map display of both online and offline downloadable maps from Mapbox – a platform used by Pinterest and Strava. These functions make the Casio Pro Trek Resin a handy device for mapping locations.

Not-So-Impressive with Water Resistivity

When it comes to preference, every true gadget enthusiast always requires the highest performing watch, packed with every needed function. The Casio Pro Trek Resin brags as the latest tech smartwatch, owning all the features you will expect. Except for its waterproof quality, that can only survive to 50 meters. This wrist companion can withstand rain, but don’t even think about scuba diving with it.

Final words on the Best Military Smartwatch

As with anything, it’s almost impossible to decide for everyone. We can only give our view on the best military smartwatch while you make your choice – well, you’ll get there eventually! But when you consider factors like durability, brand, altimeter and barometer, stopwatch, wireless connectivity, and compass reading, then you will narrow down your research to any of these products.

Best G-Shock Watch for Military

1. Casio G-Shock GW-9400 Rangeman  Solar Atomic Watch

The Casio GW-9400 Rangeman G-Shock Solar Atomic Watch is perhaps the most popular model in Casio’s Master of G series, and for good reason. It’s an excellent, tough survival watch and is available for a good price.

Tough, Rugged, and Feature-Packed

The Rangeman is a tough and rugged timepiece that can handle just about anything you throw at it.

The Rangeman’s popularity can be attributed to the Triple Sensor feature which is basically a trio of features: compass, thermometer, and altimeter-barometer. If you’re the outdoors type of person, the Rangeman could be your next companion for your upcoming adventures.

The watch features an aggressively bulky appearance which is just about right for a tool that offers superior shock protection and durability. The Rangeman is also highly resistant to dust and mud with a protected button layout. So even if the going gets tough, you can still easily access all the functions of the watch. It’s also water resistant to 660 feet (200 M).

The watch is also solar-powered which means that you don’t have to worry about replacing the batteries ever. It’s basically a watch that you can just wear and forget.

The Casio GW-9400 Rangeman G-Shock is an all-around winner in my book which is why it’s our top pick.

2. Casio G-Shock GA 100-1A1 Military Series Watch

As you can see from its name, the Casio G-SHOCK GA 100-1A1 Military Series Watch is a military-grade timepiece that’s designed for the toughest conditions and most challenging activities.

Military Grade Toughness

The GA 100-1A1 is a really good-looking watch with its all-black color scheme. Although it’s designed for military and tactical purposes, it is tough and packs enough features to be used as a reliable outdoor watch.

What makes this watch stand out from the rest of the watches from this list is the analog display. Many customers have concerns with regards to the legibility of the watch and they do make a fair point. In very dark lighting conditions, reading the watch can be hard. It does come with a handy LED lighting that illuminates the top portion of the watch.

For me, this is the way to go since it highlights enough that you can catch the time with a quick glance. This is supposed to be a stealth watch so it doesn’t have that in-your-face illumination.

The watch does come with numerous timekeeping features such as world time, daily alarms, hourly time signal, stopwatch, countdown, and many others. The watch also offers a respectable water resistance of up to 200 meters.

The GA 100-1A1 is the best G-Shock for military if you’re looking for an analog model.

3. Casio G-Shock GD 350 Watch

The Casio G-SHOCK GD 350 Watch is another unique model in this roundup due to its negative display. If you are looking for a military watch with negative display, this watch is definitely worth the look.

Vibrating Alarm Watch with Negative Display

The Casio G-SHOCK GD 350 is a timepiece that’s designed for precision. It offers the usual timekeeping features that you can expect from a G-Shock model. World time, daylight saving, 12/24 hour formats, full auto calendar, 1/100 second stopwatch, countdown timer – there’s clearly no shortage of timekeeping features here.

The vibrating alarm is definitely the key feature here. It’s not the strongest vibrating alarm watch but it should work for most people unless you are really a heavy sleeper. Unlike the traditional alarm clock, the vibration is not unsettling at all. Setting and toggling the alarm is a breeze as well.

The negative display is also another key feature. At first, I was concerned with its readability but once I had it, I was impressed. The black background with yellow-colored numerals provides a pleasing contrast. It also helps that the display is sharp and crisp.

Build quality is standard fare for a G-Shock unit. It features a big window and a solid resin case. It feels comfortable and sits just right on my wrist.

It’s another stellar G-Shock that comes at a great price.

4. Casio G-Shock Mudman GG-1000-1A5CR

The Casio G-Shock GG-1000-1A5CR is one of the newest additions to the popular Master of G Mudmaster line. As you might expect, this isn’t just a timekeeping tool but a highly-functional gadget that will serve you well in the harshest conditions.

Lives Up to the G-Shock Reputation

The GG-1000-1A5CR boasts the Mud Resist construction which means that there’s no mud or dust that will get inside your watch. This is, of course, a good thing if you’re planning to use the watch for military or outdoor purposes. The specialized construction also helps in protecting the buttons from impacts and shocks.

Aside from its exceptional toughness and resistant to elements, the watch also comes with a healthy number of features. The thermometer and digital compass are key features for outdoor enthusiasts. Water resistance clocks in at standard 200m (660ft) which means that you can it for most marine training and water sports but not for diving.

This new Mudman is also an analog model with digital displays for the date and day. However, I have some issues with the readability of the watch. Unlike the previous model in the list, the negative display worked against the GG-1000-1A5CR and it made the watch harder to read during low-light conditions.

Despite the readability issues, this is the best G-Shock watch for military and tactical purposes, as far as Mudmasters go.

5. Casio G-Shock Master of G FROGMAN GWFD1000B-1

The Frogman is one of the most revered series of G-Shocks, and for good reason. The Casio G-Shock Master of G FROGMAN GWFD1000B-1 is not exactly cheap but it’s a premium diving watch that would serve any military personnel well.

A Top-of-the-Line Diving Watch

The GWFD1000B-1 is perhaps the most expensive watch on this list but don’t let that discourage you. This Frogman is one of the best diving watches that you can find in the market.

It features a stainless steel inner case with a screw-lock case which is what you want for a diving watch. The watch is ISO (6425) Diver compliant which essentially says that it offers superior reliability underwater and has passed all sorts of tests like condensation and thermal tests.

It’s also powered by the high-end Tough Solar technology which means that your watch will work even with a weak light source. On top of that, the watch also has a compass, water depth meter, and a thermometer, making it a fairly versatile all-conditions tool.

It’s a premium watch through and through. It’s expensive but it certainly offers great value.

6. Casio G-Shock Rescue Series G7900

The Casio G-Shock Rescue Series G7900 is not exactly a watch with military specs but it’s more than suited for all-action situations. Casio has done a good job of creating a heavy-duty watch but stylish watch.

Durability and Style in One Package

The bright red color might not be for everyone but it’s certainly a watch that commands attention. The screaming red color is likely intended for workers that deal with emergencies. The G7900 is exactly what you can expect from a watch that’s used for emergencies.

Like with most G-Shocks, the durability of this unit is simply on-point. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve bumped it but there’s really no noticeable damage of sorts. The low temp LCD makes for a very readable watch regardless of the lighting condition.

The moon and tide graphs feature is a nice addition which adds a level of versatility to the timepiece. From outdoor trips to tactical purposes, this is a sturdy watch that will last you a long while.’

This wraps up our list of the best G-Shock watch for military applications. For a military watch, toughness is the name of the game. With these selections, you’re bound to find a great watch for your military or tactical needs.

Best Watch for Basic Training

Suunto Traverse Alpha

The Traverse Alpha is a more than just a watch. It has an insane amount of features to ensure you are ready to conquer basic training.

Typically, I would not say a watch that has so many computerized, digital features would be great durability-wise. The Suunto Traverse Alpha, however, is an exception. The rugged, strong stainless steel bezel keeps the watch protected. A scratch-resistant, sapphire crystal ensures the dial is well-kept and never harmed. There is even a water-resistant nylon strap that adds to the durability of this timepiece.

It’s All in the Features

What sets the Traverse Alpha apart from the rest has to be all of the innovative features that can help make basic training a breeze. The Suunto has an automatic shot detection feature, so you can keep up with your long-range shots in training, and see where you need work. An advanced GPS system that uses breadcrumb tech to track your position to let you know where you are at all times. It can even track a trip that you have taken, so finding your way back to start will be a breeze.

The battery life can last up to 14 days; so as long as you remember to recharge every so often you will be as good as gravy. YOU EVEN HAVE A BUILT IN FLASHLIGHT! Quickly find anything in field or barracks with the bright illumination from the flashlight in your watch!

The Traverse Alpha also has a radio communication ability that hooks up via Bluetooth. Set up vibration alerts to keep you updated on all the training times and events that you have to attend. All around, the Suunto Traverse Alpha is a masterpiece that is the DEFINITION of a great military watch!

G-Shock GG-1000-1A5CR

I already let you know what features are important to have in a watch for basic training. Well, this G-shock meets all the criteria. The durability of this piece is absolutely insane! It is shock resistant, mud resistant, and can withstand water depths of up to 200M.  The comfortable nylon strap is rugged and durable as well, easily resisting wear and tear that other bands tend to get through time.

Despite the large look of the watch (56.2mm case), it is very light. Meaning it is pleasant to wear on the wrist all day and does not cause any odd marks or uncomfortable feelings that some bulky watches cause. The watch also has a countdown timer. Five daily alarms to keep you on track with your day to day activities. There’s even a full auto calendar with multiple time zones! Another G-Shock makes the list. The G-Shock “Master of G” is a great choice for a basic training watch and is quite affordable as well.

What makes the Master of G different is that it is a solar powered watch. No need to recharge or buy new batteries for this bad boy! 24 hour military time can help you track the hours relevant to your work (BE HERE AT 21 HUNDRED HOURS”)!

Another special feature of this watch is the M6 atomic timekeeping. Just like the Rolex GG-100, there is also up to five daily alarms, a countdown timer, and a water resistance up to 200M.

Reliable Timekeeping

Due to the robust atomic timekeeping ability, you can rest assured that your sense of time will be on point! Atomic timekeeping is a feature that is absent in many watches. This is where a radio signal is sent out to the watch to make sure the time is accurate. So rather than being +/- a second or two; at the end of the day you are set at the EXACT time!

Top Features

  • Atomic timekeeping
  • Solar power digital watch
  • 24 hour military time

Garmin Tactix Bravo

The Tactix Bravo is somewhat of a “smart watch” that is very similar to the Suunto Traverse Alpha, but with some differences.

My favorite feature on the Garmin Tactix Bravo has to be the name. It sounds like a watch that should be owned by a special forces dude. No, but really, my favorite feature is the sunlight readable HD display. The display is easy to read in ANY atmosphere and is protected by a high-strength, domed sapphire crystal. The watch can easily be switched from day mode to night mode, which will offer night vision capabilities.

Overall, the Tactix Bravo is a solid watch for basic training. If you are into more technologically advanced watches, this is for you.

Serious Style

With the Tactix Bravo, you essentially have a cell phone, in watch form. The watch passes all of the “military tests,” Including water resistance rating, durability, innovative features, and easy readability.

Top Features

  • GPS/GLONASS positioning with automatic calibrating altimeter, barometer, and 3-axis compass
  • Night vision goggle compatible
  • Smart features for fitness and training

Timex T49612 Expedition

The last watch of the day is definitely a qualifier for a top military watch for basic training. But what makes it great is that the Timex is VERY affordable.

What stands out immediately when reading into this watch is seeing how it is designed for “outdoor torture tests.” Sounds scary to me, but in a way, it’s about to be your life for the next few weeks (just kidding)! Overall, the watch is strong, rugged, and durable- literally built to withstand torture.

With the Timex, you also get a built-in digital compass, Indiglo light up dial, and that is pretty much it technology wise. The 48mm case is built out of a durable resin material and is shock resistant up to I.S.O standards.

Withstand Tests Of Torture

Ask any of your buddies at basic training if their watches are built for torture tests. I’m pretty sure they will say no! Besides having an interesting test method behind this watches durability, it truly is one of the most durable watches on today’s review. It is also a budget-friendly watch, so you can save your hard earned cash for snacks and hide them under your bunk!

Final Word

Hopefully my review today has made it easier for you to choose a watch for basic training. Every watch on the review today has certain features that make it unique and worthy of your purchase. In the end, I still hold to my opinion that the Suunto Traverse Alpha is the best watch for basic training. However, the final choice is up to you!
