Best Tactical Smartwatch

1. Suunto Traverse Alpha

The Suunto Traverse Alpha has been getting a lot of love among outdoor lovers and for good reason. While many of its features are focused around outdoor adventures, it’s a rugged, feature-rich smartwatch that will serve you well in the field.

A Dynamic, Outdoor Tactical Smartwatch

The Suunto Traverse Alpha is one of our top picks as the best tactical smartwatch due to its ruggedness and reliability. The Traverse Alpha is housed composite case with a fixed knurled steel bezel. On top of that, the watch is protected by sapphire crystal lens and comes with a water-resistant nylon wrist strap.

This combination of features adds up to a very durable watch that can withstand even the harshest of elements. Whether you’re rock climbing or serving in law enforcement, this watch’s durability will not fail you.

This smartwatch comes with GPS and GLONASS technology, navigation becomes a non-issue. You can even set built-in shortcuts for saving your current position as a point of interest or POI. The watch itself is very easy to use and it’s made even more intuitive if you download the Movescount app.

The look of the watch just screams “tactical” with its woodland aesthetic. The display offers two options: black-on-white or white-on-black contrasts. The display is not in your face and you can even set it to show in red backlight so it works with night vision goggles.

It’s seriously one of the best tactical, outdoor smartwatches that money can buy.

2. Garmin Fenix 5X

If you are a tactical professional who’s looking for a top-of-the-line navigation smartwatch, the Garmin Fenix 5X is certainly worth the look. After all, it’s from a company that’s synonymous with stellar GPS navigation systems.

Hefty and Handsome

As mentioned, the Garmin Fenix 5X is a top-tier navigation companion. This multisport GPS watch comes with all sorts of advanced navigation features such as full-color TOPO U.S. mapping, routable cycling maps, and many others.

The GPS and GLONASS sensors work exceptionally well which is no surprise since this watch is a Garmin product after all. Even when you’re in the most challenging tactical environment, the GPS along with features like the 3-axis compass, gyroscope and barometric altimeter should come in handy.

Aside from offering excellent navigation features, the Fenix 5X is also a top-notch training companion. If you are obsessed with tracking your performance stats, the Fenix 5X is a no-brainer as it offers some of the of most advanced performance metrics I’ve seen.

The enhanced readouts for Training Status and Training Effect will allow you to see the benefits of your workout. There’s the feature called VO2 max estimator that just pumps out the stats such as running speed, heart rate variability, beats per minute, and more. You can even access more data if you have the compatible heart rate chest strap such as the HRM-Run.

It’s perhaps the most expensive tactical / fitness smartwatch on this list but it really is worth the investment.

3. Suunto Core All Black Military

Blacked out watches are ideal for the men and women in the tactical field. The Suunto Core All Black Military is a blacked out watch that provides the much-needed stealthiness along with features that many won’t mind having.

Tactical Look, Fit, and Feel

The Suunto Core All Black Military watch is the best tactical smartwatch mainly because of its looks. One look at the watch and you know that it’s a timepiece for tactical applications. However, it is stylish enough that you won’t mind wearing it on a daily basis.

The all black finish does a great job of tying the design elements altogether.

The Suunto Core All Black Military is not just a good-looking watch, it’s also a great outdoor companion with the relevant bells and whistles. For starters, it’s an ABC watch which means that it comes with an altimeter (for determining current elevation), barometer (weather forecast), and a compass. There’s also sunrise and sunset times for over 400 locations.

When it comes to ruggedness, the Suunto Core All Black Military won’t disappoint. The rotating bezel is made from knurled anodized aluminum but unfortunately, it’s not very good in warding off scratches. However, the scratches do add a bit of personality to the watch but that’s just me.

The watch feels solid but never clunky. In fact, the Suunto Core All Black Military is a lightweight watch and feels good on the wrist.

The Core All Black Military is yet another Suunto classic.

4. Samsung Gear S3 Frontier

Samsung is known for their excellent electronic products but not exactly for their smartwatches. This is why the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier was such a nice surprise for me.

Tactical Smartwatch for Android Users

There are actually two Gear S3 models – the Classic and the Frontier. Since we are rounding up the best tactical smartwatch we went with the Frontier model which features a sportier design.

The watch comes with a silicone strap which is more ideal for more rugged applications. It’s easy to slip on and offers just the right amount of comfort which is good if you’re wearing the watch for hours. However, the strap is a dirt magnet. If you’re not a fan of the strap, you can replace it with any 22mm watch band.

The best thing about the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is the innovative rotating bezel. Rotating the bezel makes a satisfying sound that I can’t get enough of. The bezel is used for navigating the UI which is nothing short of amazing. Quickly scrolling through the menus is just a delightful experience.

The Gear S3 Frontier is also packed with useful features. The built-in GPS should come in handy for tracking your activity and staying on top of your training. When paired with your smartphone, the watch can nearly eliminate the need for having a mobile device. You can read texts, emails, alerts, and even make hands-free calls.

The Gear S3 Frontier is a bit on the expensive side but it’s certainly a better tactical timepiece than the Samsung Galaxy Watch.

5. TicWatch Pro

There’s a good chance that you haven’t heard of Mobvoi or Ticwatch products before. Mobvoi is a Chinese company and is responsible for our next tactical smartwatch, the TicWatch Pro.

Battery Life That Impresses

Don’t let the fact that the TicWatch Pro is a Chinese-made smartwatch deter you from checking it out.

For starters, the TicWatch Pro is actually a high-end offering by Mobvoi. It features a fairly high-end design (which frankly looks like the Gear S3 Frontier) and a revolutionary dual-screen technology. The top-layer display looks more like a traditional watch screen but doesn’t look that high-end.

The second layer, on the other hand, is an OLED smart screen which looks more premium. The OLED screen looks brighter and more impactful. From this screen, you’ll be able to access most of the Wear OS features like GPS tracker, step counter, heart-rate monitor, apps, and more.

But what makes the TicWatch Pro a good tactical smartwatch is its impressive battery life. The watch features two modes of operation: Smart and Essential modes. The Essential Mode basically turns your watch into a low-tech timepiece which can give you as many as 30 days of battery life.

The TicWatch Pro will just keep on ticking even when you’re out in the field for extended periods of time.

6. Casio Pro-Trek WSD-F20A

Casio actually has a smartwatch offering and it’s a pretty good one. The Casio Pro-Trek WSD-F20A features the signature Casio toughness and it just got smarter.

Casio Toughness With Military Standards

The Casio Pro-Trek WSD-F20A is one of the toughest smartwatches that you can get. Whether it’s outdoors or the city, it’s a lifestyle wearable that delivers the goods.

To start, the Pro-Trek WSD-F20A is a big watch with a width of 53mm. On smaller wrists, the watch might be too heavy and uncomfortable. Despite the size, the watch is surprisingly comfortable. It doesn’t get itchy or sweaty even after wearing it for hours.

The Pro-Trek WSD-F20A’s design is a winner in my book. The bold design really fits the outdoor lifestyle. There’s the standard black version if you’re looking for something more “stealthy.”

The watch also features two screens and one is a beautiful OLED display. It runs on Wear OS which can be quite buggy but it gets the job done. However, the battery life is slightly disappointing which can last for only 6 to 8 hours on a single charge.

The watch is marketed as an outdoor timepiece but it’s a good option for tactical applications. Unfortunately, the price tag is a bit on the expensive side.

Tactical Watches Just Got Smarter

That wraps up our roundup of the best tactical smartwatch. Hopefully, this buyer’s guide has helped you find a watch that best fits your tactical needs.

Sensors

For outdoor enthusiasts, being able to monitor your health and fitness, and keep track of your location is a big plus. By using the GPS features, you can keep track of your routes while its GLONASS provides increased GPS accuracy. Activity Tracking & Connectivity

The Transverse Alpha watch gives you details of your physical activity levels. This comes as a great feature, especially if you intend to lose some pounds or engage in outdoor activities.

For example, its GPS function prevents a hiker from getting lost by keeping track of past and current locations. This also comes in handy during fishing or hunting as it helps users mark ideal spots for chasing prey.

With the Traverse Alpha, you can measure your daily steps and estimate the calories burned throughout the day. By default, you can view your estimated daily step count in the time display. Also, the watch gives an overview of the steps taken in a week, month, or year.

As an avid Hunters and Angler, time is crucial, which is why the Alpha offers a moon phase calendar, and Moonrise and Moonset times. With this, it’s pretty easy to know when to go fishing and hunting. A big plus as it comes with an auto-shot detection that dates and mark the exact spot when you shoot a rifle or shotguns.

If you don’t want to cause a scene in the morning or at night, you can set your preferred time to wake up and work routine using its silent alarm or vibration alerts.

What’s even better is that the smartwatch is also compatible with the Movescount app. This app allows you to share and sync your daily activities, explore new routes, and customize your watch.

The Traverse didn’t leave out some essential features. It still offers additional features which include a stopwatch, notifications, and social features, etc.

Price and Warranty

The Suunto Traverse Alpha cost over $350 and it comes with a two-year warranty. Suunto also offers one year warranty that covers accessories including bracelets, and sensors, etc. However, the company does not make any provisions for wear and tear.

Before you enjoy the warranty service, the company suggests that you register the watch on the company’s website with proof of purchase.

Opinion and Drawbacks

The Traverse Alpha is a durable smartwatch for outdoor enthusiasts, but construction workers and military will also benefit from its built-in features. Compared to the Fenix 5, it is lightweight and comfortable to wear. Also, when it comes to Suunto smartwatches, it stands as one of the top models with great sensor features.

However, it also has its drawbacks when compared to Fenix 5. First, its face screen display only in two colors (Black and white). On GPS mode, the battery life is 9 hours shorter, which means you enjoy more time using the Garmin Fenix 5. Unlike the Garmin, the Traverse won’t alert you when the battery is low.

Garmin Fenix 5

The Garmin Fenix 5 stand as one of the best watches for basic training and other rigorous activities. It delivers a wide range of features while sporting an attractive design that rivals the look on any Suunto smartwatch.

Packed with fitness, health, and GPS tracking features, the Fenix 5 can keep you fit and safe on any terrain. Furthermore, it has a sturdy build that can withstand usage under extreme conditions. For these reasons, this smartwatch has a great edge in the Suunto Traverse Alpha vs Garmin Fenix 5 contest.

Design and Battery Life

Since Fenix 5 is ranked as one of the best outdoor smartwatches, it’s expected that it has a rugged design. However, it has an elegant look that can complement any outfit.

The Fenix 5 sports a display screen covered with sapphire glass. With this material, the watch can handle knocks and scratches encountered during outdoor activities.

The case is made from fiber-reinforced polymer while a stainless steel case back secures its engine. A replaceable elastomer bracelet fits the smartwatch on any wrist size.

The Fenix 5 promises a water resistance up to 100m, making it a good watch for most aquatic activities. However, sports such as scuba diving might damage it.

Battery life depends on the features activated on the watch, such as sensors, activity tracking, and GPS. On basic mode, it runs up to 14 days, but when in GPS mode, it takes up to 24 hours for the battery to drain. Finally, on UltraTrac GPS mode, it offers 75 hours of battery life.

Sensors

In comparison with other smartwatches on the market, the Fenix 5 offers accurate sensor features. Unlike Suunto, it features a heart rate monitor that can track your heart rate without the use of a chest strap. The tracked heart rate is not only shown on the watch but also recorded in Garmin connect. This makes it easy for you to check your progress.

You can use the watch to calculate burned calories, stress levels, and monitor your sleep pattern every day.

This Garmin smartwatch provides GPS sensors with GLONASS function for maximum accuracy.  Avid travelers and other outdoor enthusiasts will find this watch handy as it has a built-in barometer, compass, and other measurement tools.

Activity Tracking & Connectivity

Like most smartwatches, the Fenix 5 supports a healthy lifestyle by tracking various activities. It performs this task by using sensors that monitor different health stats.

A sleep tracker detects and monitors your movement during sleep hours (except naps) while the auto goal feature creates a daily step goal based on your recent activity levels. The move alert encourages you to go for a walk after prolonged sitting.

The Garmin Connect offers you more leverage to download plenty of apps such as car locators, work planners, etc. Not only that, it allows you to share information and activities with other members on the Garmin Community. As for the Strava Live segment, this helps runners and cyclists perform better. Use the LiveTrack feature to allow family and friends to cheer you on every step on race day in real-time.

Pair your phone with the smartwatch to enjoy smart notifications. With this feature, you get instants alerts like text, Facebook notification, and calls from your phone to the smartwatch. This makes it easy for you to respond or decline messages when you’re running or engaging in other sports.

Add more function to your smartwatch using the Connect 1Q store packed with many apps. If you misplace your smartphone, you can quickly use its Find My Phone App on the watch to locate it.

Garmin also packs up other exciting feature you will find useful. These features include sunrise and sunset alerts, and Golf features, etc.

Price and Warranty

You can get the Garmin Fenix 5 for more than $400. After purchase, the Garmin offers a one-year limited warranty that covers issues with materials or quality.

Furthermore, before you can claim your warranty, register the watch on the company’s website. Ensure you have either the original or the copy of your receipt.

Opinion and Drawbacks

Overall, Garmin Fenix features excellent sensor, display, and connectivity that will satisfy buyers in need of sports smartwatch. The best part about is its long battery life and the accuracy of its GPs and sensor features.

If you’re looking for a smartwatch that supports many apps, this is the best choice for you. However, it does not have a built-in world timer and no feature to trackback your route outdoors. Finally, those with smaller wrist might not find this watch comfortable to wear because it is pretty bulky and heavy.

Final Thought and Recommendation on Suunto Traverse Alpha vs Garmin Fenix 5

From everything mentioned above, it’s certain that both smartwatches are durable and comes with great features.

However, having looked at their display faces, designs, apps, and battery life, we concluded that the Garmin won this challenge. First, the Fenix 5 can go 9 hours more on GPS mode than Suunto before needing a battery recharge. It supports varieties of apps than the Traverse alpha, and compatible with window phone.

Well, in terms of durability the Suunto traverse Alpha edges out the Garmin Fenix 5. Also, you can’t check your temperature with Fenix 5 but the Suunto can do that for you. What’s even better is that you can track back your route with the Traverse Alpha but not with Fenix 5.

Finally, with all this said, both smartwatches stand a great challenge. But I’m sorry to break your heart with my choice I still prefer the Garmin Fenix 5 due to its attractive design and color LCD screen.

The Suunto Spartan Ultra has features which make it durable and comfortable to use. But it has some issues that make it lose some points in this Suunto Spartan Ultra vs Garmin Fenix 5 contest.

First, Spartan Ultra display screen is less sturdy compared to Fenix 5. Although it can stay ON for a long time without charging, it offers lesser battery life than Garmin F5. Now let’s head down to the Garmin Fenix 5.

The Garmin Fenix 5 stands as one of the sturdiest multisport outdoor watches on the market. It comes with impressive features that make it a worthy investment for the modern consumer, construction workers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

One exciting part is that the Fenix 5 supports most Google apps like the Find my phone app, which allows users to locate misplaced smartphones. Since it won’t be right to disturb anybody, you can activate its silent alarm to keep you up for morning activities.

The Garmin didn’t skip out on providing other basic Features. It still features smart notifications, stroke identification, and digital scorecards.

Price and Additional Customer Satisfaction

Opinion and Drawbacks

From the above, it’s evident that the Fenix 5 smartwatch sports an incredible amount of app and features. With this said, this watch will meet the needs of any athlete or adventurer looking for a smartwatch.

However, what we don’t like about this product is its poor connectivity in remote areas. Another downside is the absence of a touchscreen, and it looks bulky on the wrist. Overall, the watch is a significant investment for outdoor enthusiasts.

Final Thought and Verdict

From the above comparison between Suunto Spartan Ultra vs Garmin Fenix 5, you should have known that both brands come with impressive features and are made of durable materials. However, the Garmin Fenix takes a step further by offering additional features including connectivity and tracking features.

So who is the winner in the battle between Suunto Spartan Ultra vs Garmin Fenix 5? Well, we will go with the Fenix 5 because it comes with impressive features not common to most smartwatches. It also defeats the Spartan Ultra in many aspects.

For instance, the battery life of the Fenix 5 exceeds that of the Ultra. Also, the Garmin watch is resistant to dust, water, and sweat while the Ultra features only water resistance.

The Fenix 5 navigation is easy to read than Spartan Ultra. Finally, the Ultra features only Bluetooth while the Garmin Fenix 5 supports Bluetooth and caps it up with WiFi and ANT +.

Overall, both smartwatches are exceptional devices for outdoors. But if you think you don’t like both smartwatches you can look out for other best outdoor smartwatch.

The Best Dive Computer Watch

1. Suunto Zoop Novo: Best Entry Level Dive Computer Watch

It was not recently that I have been messing around with Suunto but with products like the Suunto Traverse Alpha, it’s hard not to have high expectations for the Suunto Zoop Novo. I am happy to report that this dive computer watch has met my expectations and then some.

Best Dive Computer Watch for Beginners

Dive experts and veterans will find the Suunto Zoop Novo to be quite basic. However, it has enough functions and features that make it perfect for beginners or simply for divers who prefer a basic computer.

Although it’s a basic dive computer, the Zoop Novo offers enough features for a safer diving experience. The big, easy-to-read digits ensure legibility while underwater. The Zoop Novo’s interface is fairly intuitive but complete beginners will likely need to read the manual to use the watch properly.

The Zoop Novo utilizes the Suunto RGBM (reduced gradient bubble model) for calculating decompression stops. One common feedback about Suunto’s dive computers is that they are too conservative. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing for an entry-level computer.

The Suunto Zoop Novo has a maximum display depth of 330 ft (100 meters) and will automatically trigger at 15 ft. The watch works great as a backup dive computer as well.

2. Oceanic Geo 2.0 Air/Nitrox: Top-Notch

Divers who prefer a mid-range all-rounder computer watch will have a lot to love about the Oceanic Geo 2.0 Air/Nitrox. On top of being a pretty good dive computer watch, it looks good enough to be worn as a daily wristwatch.

Top-Notch All-Rounder

The Oceanic Geo 2.0 Air/Nitrox is available in both white and titanium. As you can see from the picture, this is one good-looking watch and most people won’t have a problem wearing this on a daily basis. However, I am happy to report that it’s a reliable computer dive watch as well.

The watch features 4 operating modes: watch (complete alarm and countdown timer), norm (for Air and Nitrox dive modes), free dive, and gauge. One thing that I like about this dive computer is the Dual Algorithm technology which allows you to set decompression and no-decompression profiles. It’s also a breeze to program the watch to switch between two Nitrox mixes.

The watch also comes with flashing LED lights and an audible alarm that will notify you once you are approaching a no-decompression limit or going over a safe ascent rate. The interface is very easy to use and read and the computer can store up to 24 dives.

Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced diver, the Oceanic Geo 2.0 Air/Nitrox is a solid dive computer watch to consider.

3. Suunto D6i Novo: Best High-End Dive Watch

Divers with a sky-is-the-limit budget should consider getting the Suunto D6i Novo dive computer for its impressive technology and striking aesthetics. It’s no way a cheap watch so this option is definitely for a splurge.

A Dive Watch Worthy of a Splurge

The quality of the Suunto D6i Novo is a standout with its stainless steel bezel, steel casing, and silicone strap. The construction ensures that you’ll be having this for years. The watch is fitted with sapphire crystal glass display with anti-reflective coating. Even when underwater, the watch looks clear as day.

The D6i Novo features 4 diving modes: Air, Nitrox, Gauge and Freediving. Users can switch between three different gases and I must say that the interface is quite intuitive as well. There’s also the innovative apnea timer which is a godsend for freedivers.

Finding your way underwater is made easy by the 3D digital compass. Plus, it comes with a dive planner for storing multiple dive profiles and surface intervals.

My only gripe is that the battery is not rechargeable which means that a replacement will be necessary down the line. It might be an expensive freediving watch but the price tag is more than justified.

4. Cressi Leonardo: Best Inexpensive Dive Watch

The Cressi Leonardo is an excellent dive computer for under $200. It also happens to be the best-selling dive computer watch on Amazon, so it’s certainly worth the look.

Affordable and Gets the Job Done

The Cressi Leonardo is not intended to be used as an everyday watch but it features a rugged, low-profile design. What I love about this watch is its single-button interface. With just one button, you can easily operate the watch and access all of its features. It’s not the most intuitive out there but gains more points when it comes to ease of use.

Like most dive computer watches, the Cressi Leonardo comes with multiple modes: Air, Nitrox and Gauge. The edge-to-edge display is wide and easy to read. However, it does have some legibility issues when underwater but nothing too major. Thankfully, you can always toggle the backlight when visibility becomes an issue.

The watch also comes with a 60 dive, 70 hour logbook memory function which works great for progress tracking. An audible alarm is also present for added safety.

The Cressi Leonardo is a solid dive computer watch for beginners and experienced divers alike.

5. Mares Puck Pro: A Bang for Your Buck

The Mares Puck is considered to be a classic and was considered to be the best dive computer watch back then. The Mares Puck Pro is the updated version of the Puck and it comes with the much-needed improvements.

Simplicity and Ease of Use

If you are looking for a computer watch that’s a breeze to use, the Mares Puck Pro is one of the top picks. One of the first things you’ll notice about this watch is that it’s a bit bulky. It’s about 2 inches in diameter and nearly an inch thick. While this may seem like a drawback for many people, the large size allows for a larger screen display as well.

The large screen displays all the necessary information at a glance. The Puck Pro also features a single-button interface which keeps things simple. However, navigation can be quite tedious as you scroll through the many different functions.

The dive computer watch comes with 3 modes: Air, Nitrox, and Gauge. The watch also features audible and visual alarms for statuses like ascendance rate, decompression stop violation, exceed safety for ppO2/MOD, and low battery.

When it comes to the best dive computer watch, this one is definitely a bang for your buck.

6. Aqua Lung i450t: Best Dive Watch for Tec Divers

If you happen to bump into a tec diver, there’s a good chance he’s using a Aqua Lung i450t. The Aqua Lung i450t is the go-to dive computer watch for the most experienced divers.

Designed for Tec Divers

The Aqua Lung i450t dive computer features four different modes: Air, Nitrox, Gauge and Free Dive. Highlights include the multiple gas capability feature that can manage up to 3 Nitrox mixes (with 3 transmitters) and the Pre-Dive planning feature.

The four-button interface makes it a breeze to scroll through the menus and access the features that you want. It’s not that different when using your favorite G-Shock. Even in the most adverse condition, you should have no trouble using the Aqua Lung i450t while underwater.

The dive computer will automatically adjust depending on your altitude or whether you’re diving in fresh or salt water. It also comes with a digital compass that works surprisingly well. The display features a backlight and offers excellent visibility.

It’s not the most budget-friendly dive computer watch in this list but it certainly offers a great value.

Dive Safe

That’s it for our list of the best dive computer watch that you can buy in the market. A dive computer is just one of those gadgets that divers can’t leave home without.

Hopefully, this guide has helped you pick a reliable diving companion.

Your time is important to me. Now I would love for you to read through my whole article that I curated just for my fellow watch enthusiasts. However, to make things easy, I have displayed the top watches in an easy-to-read table. If you want a more in-depth description of why these watches are great, read on!

Best Watch for Basic Training

Suunto Traverse Alpha

The Traverse Alpha is a more than just a watch. It has an insane amount of features to ensure you are ready to conquer basic training.

Typically, I would not say a watch that has so many computerized, digital features would be great durability-wise. The Suunto Traverse Alpha, however, is an exception. The rugged, strong stainless steel bezel keeps the watch protected. A scratch-resistant, sapphire crystal ensures the dial is well-kept and never harmed. There is even a water-resistant nylon strap that adds to the durability of this timepiece.

It’s All in the Features

What sets the Traverse Alpha apart from the rest has to be all of the innovative features that can help make basic training a breeze. The Suunto has an automatic shot detection feature, so you can keep up with your long-range shots in training, and see where you need work. An advanced GPS system that uses breadcrumb tech to track your position to let you know where you are at all times. It can even track a trip that you have taken, so finding your way back to start will be a breeze.

The battery life can last up to 14 days; so as long as you remember to recharge every so often you will be as good as gravy. YOU EVEN HAVE A BUILT IN FLASHLIGHT! Quickly find anything in field or barracks with the bright illumination from the flashlight in your watch!

The Traverse Alpha also has a radio communication ability that hooks up via Bluetooth. Set up vibration alerts to keep you updated on all the training times and events that you have to attend. All around, the Suunto Traverse Alpha is a masterpiece that is the DEFINITION of a great military watch!

Top Features

  • Advanced GPS Software
  • Built-in flashlight
  • Durable build (glass fiber, stainless steel coated case, knurled bezel and sapphire crystal, water resistant nylon strap)

G-Shock GG-1000-1A5CR

A close second to the Traverse Alpha (and maybe a first to others) is the G-Shock model GG-1000-1A5CR. This piece is very durable and can handle almost anything.

I already let you know what features are important to have in a watch for basic training. Well, this G-shock meets all the criteria. The durability of this piece is absolutely insane! It is shock resistant, mud resistant, and can withstand water depths of up to 200M.  The comfortable nylon strap is rugged and durable as well, easily resisting wear and tear that other bands tend to get through time.

Despite the large look of the watch (56.2mm case), it is very light. Meaning it is pleasant to wear on the wrist all day and does not cause any odd marks or uncomfortable feelings that some bulky watches cause. The watch also has a countdown timer. Five daily alarms to keep you on track with your day to day activities. There’s even a full auto calendar with multiple time zones! And last, it has an extremely bright LED backlight for easy readability at any time.

Although the timepiece is a battery powered quartz, I am sure you will not have to worry about changing the batteries often. This piece has a battery life of up to two years!

A Monster Watch

Not only does this G-Shock look like a military watch, it is literally considered one! The strong build is sure to keep your watch intact, while the innovative features can help  you acomplish any task that is thrown your way during intense training!

Top Features

  • Digital compass
  • Super-illuminator; LED backlight
  • Strong, powerful and robust build

G-Shock “Master of G” GW-9400-1CR

Another G-Shock makes the list. The G-Shock “Master of G” is a great choice for a basic training watch and is quite affordable as well.

What makes the Master of G different is that it is a solar powered watch. No need to recharge or buy new batteries for this bad boy! 24 hour military time can help you track the hours relevant to your work (BE HERE AT 21 HUNDRED HOURS”)!

Another special feature of this watch is the M6 atomic timekeeping. Just like the Rolex GG-100, there is also up to five daily alarms, a countdown timer, and a water resistance up to 200M.

Reliable Timekeeping

Due to the robust atomic timekeeping ability, you can rest assured that your sense of time will be on point! Atomic timekeeping is a feature that is absent in many watches. This is where a radio signal is sent out to the watch to make sure the time is accurate. So rather than being +/- a second or two; at the end of the day you are set at the EXACT time!

Top Features

  • Atomic timekeeping
  • Solar power digital watch
  • 24 hour military time

Garmin Tactix Bravo

The Tactix Bravo is somewhat of a “smart watch” that is very similar to the Suunto Traverse Alpha, but with some differences.

My favorite feature on the Garmin Tactix Bravo has to be the name. It sounds like a watch that should be owned by a special forces dude. No, but really, my favorite feature is the sunlight readable HD display. The display is easy to read in ANY atmosphere and is protected by a high-strength, domed sapphire crystal. The watch can easily be switched from day mode to night mode, which will offer night vision capabilities.

Overall, the Tactix Bravo is a solid watch for basic training. If you are into more technologically advanced watches, this is for you.

Serious Style

With the Tactix Bravo, you essentially have a cell phone, in watch form. The watch passes all of the “military tests,” Including water resistance rating, durability, innovative features, and easy readability.

Top Features

  • GPS/GLONASS positioning with automatic calibrating altimeter, barometer, and 3-axis compass
  • Night vision goggle compatible
  • Smart features for fitness and training

Timex T49612 Expedition

The last watch of the day is definitely a qualifier for a top military watch for basic training. But what makes it great is that the Timex is VERY affordable.

What stands out immediately when reading into this watch is seeing how it is designed for “outdoor torture tests.” Sounds scary to me, but in a way, it’s about to be your life for the next few weeks (just kidding)! Overall, the watch is strong, rugged, and durable- literally built to withstand torture.

With the Timex, you also get a built-in digital compass, Indiglo light up dial, and that is pretty much it technology wise. The 48mm case is built out of a durable resin material and is shock resistant up to I.S.O standards.

Withstand Tests Of Torture

Ask any of your buddies at basic training if their watches are built for torture tests. I’m pretty sure they will say no! Besides having an interesting test method behind this watches durability, it truly is one of the most durable watches on today’s review. It is also a budget-friendly watch, so you can save your hard earned cash for snacks and hide them under your bunk!

Final Word

Hopefully my review today has made it easier for you to choose a watch for basic training. Every watch on the review today has certain features that make it unique and worthy of your purchase. In the end, I still hold to my opinion that the Suunto Traverse Alpha is the best watch for basic training. However, the final choice is up to you!

The Best Freediving Watches for 2019

Best Freediving Watch

Dive watches are not only big in the Scuba market. These are timepieces that have become extremely desirable in the last few years.  Beautiful, high-class dive watches have been around for decades, like the Rolex Submariner for example. There is no doubt that watches like the Submariner are TOP NOTCH timepieces, however, I will not be reviewing the “luxury” dive watches today. Sorry Rolex fans!

Today, I will be focused on more affordable freediving watches. More specifically, the watches being reviewed today can almost be called computers. Read on to find out why the SUUNTO D6I is today’s ultimate winner and holds the title of the BEST freediving watch of 2019!

Top Freediving Watches What Makes it Great Diver Rating
Suunto D6I Tilt-compensated 3D compass, wireless air integration. Overall the technology is great with a clean design ★★★★★

Garmin Descent Mk1 Futuristic desgin, great value, dive log up to 200 dives ★★★★

Best Freediving Watches

Suunto D6I Dive Computer Watch

If durability, design, technology and specific “dive features” are important to you (they better be), this is the perfect watch for you!

Suunto is a brand that may not be mainstream (yet). But they are definitely increasing popularity. And for a very good reason, they create great, innovative timepieces.

The D6I Novo Zulu captures features a textile strap, which is built for strength and durability. This NATO strap was originally designed for military use! To ensure extra protection, the D6I is built with a high grade, steel case, and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. An awesome feature is also the logging, video, and image capturing abilities of the D6I. Once you take the image or video, you can easily sync to Suunto DM5 software, so you can share your underwater adventures with the world!

Robust “All Around” Dive Watch

Why the Suunto D6I is the best dive watch for 2019, in my opinion, is because of its all-around features. Not only do you get extreme durability, but also advanced technological features, a nice design and loads of other useful perks. These perks make the watch a PERFECT choice for any professional diver as well as those who dive as a hobby. The D6I hands down has the most dive modes and features to ensure a smooth dive every time.

Top Features

  • Durable, army-style textile Zulu strap
  • Camera and Video options to sync with a computer
  • Great Design
  • Recommended for Freediving and Scuba diving
  • 5 Modes: Air, Nitrox, Free Dive, Gauge and Watch
  • Wireless air integration
  • Best for breath hold training

Garmin Descent MK1

Garmin is a brand that many people know about. They produce high-quality tech gear and did not disappoint with the MK1 Diver.

The MK1 is an innovative masterpiece. Garmin has merged a technologically advanced smartwatch look, with the durability and some physical features of a typical dive watch.  If this is a watch you decide to purchase, know that it has great reviews from current owners and is known to last for a very long time.

Innovative Diver

With the MK1 you are receiving a watch with a full-featured GPS, a fully functional  Bühlmann ZHL-16c algorithm that ensures you stay within your dive limits and a heart rate monitor that keeps track of your heart rate throughout your whole dive. The watch was designed for serious divers who take the sport seriously and want a RELIABLE and BEAUTIFUL device to tag along through every journey they encounter. You will always be confident where you are with the reliable GPS feature, so you will not have to worry about getting lost at sea.

Top Features

  • ABC sensor capabilities (altimeter, barometer, and compass)
  • Elevate wrist-based heart rate technology
  • Futuristic look with high-quality materials

Suunto Zoop Novo

The Zoop Novo is not as flashy as the other watches being reviewed today. But do not let that count this one out, it is powerful.

Isn’t the name in itself just fun? Imagine telling people what kind of watch you are wearing.

“Hey man, what kind of watch is that?”

“Oh, just a Zoop Novo dive watch by Suunto!”

It sounds straight out of a fictional cartoon story, so you know this has some interesting features to it. For one, you are not limited by color. With 4+ colors to choose from, you are sure to find a color that fits your underwater personality. Even better is the Zoop Nova is affordable. This is a diver that does not break the bank. Easily flip through the five-dive modes (Air, Nitrox, Gauge, Free and Off) while smiling because you were able to save money with this purchase!

Simple and Easy to Use

When hundreds of feet under the great abyss, you can be easily distracted by a watch with hundreds of buttons and features. Not with the Zoop Novo. The simple interface has 4 buttons that control the whole watch. Readability of the dial is also simple, with a bright backlight display, that is meant to be read in the darkest of areas. So although the Zoop Novo does not have the most innovative and advanced features like other watches on the list today, it is a watch that will function with ease.

It is a nightmare when you are one hundred feet under the ocean and struggling to get your watch to function properly. With the Zoop Novo, it is as easy as a push of a button.

Top Features

  • Easy use/simple design
  • Long lasting battery life
  • Multiple colorways

Suunto D9TX

Wow! A lot of Suunto watches made the list today! Time to find out what makes the D9TX a great choice!

Anyone who glances at this watch will be intrigued. The full body, titanium design is as durable as it looks. Add the protective sapphire crystal and you got yourself a durable watch. Even the bracelet on this watch is titanium. It was literally built with strength in mind. I am pretty sure it was tested out on Bruce Banner while he was angry…..

Other than the beautiful physical features, there are also great aspects that are inside of the watch.  You can easily plan or log any dive straight from your PC or Mac. A full continuous decompression algorithm is installed to ensure a safe dive every time you take a dive. And this watch even has a tilt compensated 3D-compass.

Strong and Complex

No, I’m not describing a Bourbon whiskey; save that for after you purchase a watch!

It is easy to fall in love with this watch by sight. The watch is bright, shiny and made for any type of dive. The titanium build sets this watch apart from many of its counterparts. Titanium gives the watch a futuristic, yet lustrous look. This may be one of the more pricey of watches being reviewed today, but if you like the design and materials more than the others; than there is nothing wrong with purchasing the D9TX. Current owners are MORE than happy with their watch. It is not easy to find negative reviews about the D9TX, simply because it is a great watch.

Top Features

  • Titanium case and bracelet with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal
  • 5 modes to choose from while freediving (Air, Trimix, Free Dive, Gauge and Watch)
  • 3D compass with wireless air integration
  • Recommended for advanced freedivers in the commercial or technical diving
  • Memory up to 80 hours

Dive Watch By Pyle

The Dive Watch by Pyle definitely has a more “classic” dive watch look to it, rather than the dive computer style.

Now, to be honest, this watch was added to today’s review because of its INSANE affordability. You are losing many features because of the cheaper price point, however, it is still a notable mention against the other watches.

The bezel on this piece looks exactly like one on a Submariner.  What is different on this dive watch is the rubber band and its digital features.

This watch has a built-in stopwatch, thermometer, countdown timer, and has multiple time zones. It also has an automatic dive mode that sets in when in depths of more than 5 feet.

A Functional Watch at a Great Price

You get what you pay for. That is exactly what I say to describe the dive watch by Pyle. It is a decent dive watch that has multiple colors and designs to choose from and many digital features for diving. Is it the MOST reliable watch? No, not at all. But for the insanely great price you pay, it is what you should expect. If only it worked like a Rolex….

Go with Pyle if you are a new diver and want to try out how dive watches work, to see if they are helpful for you. After that you can move up to the big leagues!

Top Features

  • The amazing price
  • Automatic dive mode
  • Multiple colors to choose from/ Good to wear out, other than just for diving

Final Verdict

Freediving watches, or more appropriately, freediving COMPUTERS, are very important devices for serious divers. If you plan on diving professionally, or for fun, it is always a good idea to have a trusty dive watch. My review today was to show some of the BEST freediving watches of 2019, of all different styles and price points.

Any watch you decide to purchase should fit your needs if you look closely at all the features that the watch includes. At the end of the day, my suggestion would be to go with Suunto D6I. But hey, who am I, I’m just a watch fanatic. The final decision is up to YOU!

Buy From a Reliable Source

Always remember when buying a watch online, especially ones with higher values. Buy from a trustworthy marketplace like Amazon. I hope I was able to make your search for the perfect freediving watch easier today. Happy watch shopping my friends!

Suunto vs G-Shock: Which Watch Should You Purchase?

Suunto vs G-Shock

G-Shock watches have disrupted the military watch market for years. The large, durable and unique designs are popular among watch fanatics who have a main interest in “tactical” or military watches. (Tactical watches are built for durability and are sometimes used in the American Military). Today I’m having Suunto vs. G-Shock face off.

Overview

Suunto is another military watch brand that is gaining popularity.  The company began in Finland over 80 years ago and specialized in making liquid filled compasses. Today, the brand is a top leader in military watches, competing closely with the powerhouse Casio!

So which brand is better? Hmmmm, I guess that is my job today. Well, instead of keeping my audience on the edge of their seats for today’s review, let me just flat out say that CASIO REIGNS SUPREME.  Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of great watches by Suunto. The reason I say Casio is the go-to is that of three main factors. Price, durability, and design.

Many Suunto watches are much more pricey than any G-Shock. The durability of G-Shocks cannot be compared to Suunto. G-Shocks are built for durability, whereas Suuntos are built more for technology. Lastly, the designs of G-Shocks are complex and interesting. So much so that G-Shocks are worn with almost any attire; even formal at times! Suunto’s on the other hand, are pretty plain and look like your average smartwatches.

Below, I will review top watches by each watchmaker and conclude why G-Shock is the better choice. At the end of the day, the decision is ultimately yours; I’m just here to make your decision easier! 😉

Casio G-Shock GA100-1A1

The model GA100-1A1 is definitely a top watch by Casio. Not only is it very durable, nice looking and comfortable; but reasonably priced!  No matter where you are in the world, this watch has got your back!  The world time has up to 29 time zones and has the ability to set on/off daylight savings. Durability is also a strong suit. This watch can handle up to 200 METERS of water depth! And yes, it is VERY shock resistant. I honestly believe this watch can make it through a Hulk transformation…

Other highlights include full loaded auto-calendar, programmed until 2099 (hopefully you make it until then),  a large 37mm case, auto LED light within the dial and a 1/1000th Second Stopwatch with Speed Indicator.

All in The Price

It is easy to see why this is a highly regarded watch by Casio. But the true deal breaker is the price. All of the aesthetics of this watch can definitely be priced at a higher point. When accounting for the design, unique features and durability, this watch is probably the best choice. So keep this watch in mind if you are looking for great, yet affordable!

Casio G-Shock GW-9400BJ-1JF G-Shock Master of G Rangeman

This watch really is something. The Rangeman is a favorite among Casio fanatics. And you will soon find out why!

Now, in my opinion, G-Shocks are not the nicest of watches. They are still trending as an everyday watch and no doubt, they can be worn with most casual attire. But what makes this watch so great is because of what’s inside this masterpiece.

This G-Shock is running off of a Japanese automatic movement.  It is not every day that you see a G-Shock with an automatic movement; which is why this watch is so impressive. Besides the movement, this watch also features a triple sensor “engine” with an altimeter/barometer, thermometer, and a compass. I guess you can say this is the ultimate military watch!

Other specs also include a carbon fiber band, a LARGE 54 mm case and a water resistance up to 200 M. You simply can not go wrong with the Master of G Rangeman.

An “All Around” Watch

The Rangeman is sure to keep any buyer satisfied. The durability is ridiculously great. Not many watches are SOLAR PROOF and shock resistant. Yeah, no sun is burning up this bad boy. Swimming is never an issue, this watch is sure to hold its own no matter how strong the current!

With an all-black design, the watch can be worn with almost anything; making it a perfect “go to” watch for any occasion. Lastly, and most importantly, the Rangeman is an AUTOMATIC TIMEPIECE! A whole lot of G-Shocks are made with quartz movements, but if you opt for the Rangeman, your getting an automatic movement my friends! To me, this is an extremely important feature when deciding on a watch to purchase. The complexity and effort put into designing and creating an automatic movement cannot be compared to a battery powered quartz.

G-Shock Extra Large Display

Everythings better when it’s bigger….. Right? The military series G-Shock offers owners a 55mm case! So readability should never be an issue with this timepiece. The watch also has the ability to change the time between 29 time zones. The watch also has a full auto calendar pre-programmed until 2099. You don’t have to worry about time with the military series, because the watch has four daily alarms and even has a snooze button (lay off the snooze)! Accuracy is also a great feature of this piece. Expect +/- fifteen seconds per month; which is actually VERY good for an affordable Casio watch.

Size Matters

Ultimately what sets this watch apart from the rest is a large size. If you have a big wrist, or like big faced watches, then this watch is for you! With large size comes easy readability, heavyweight materials, and extreme durability. So, if you do in fact like large watches, the military series is a MUST.

If the large size keeps you from choosing this watch, I recommend that you look further into it. Although it is large, the design of the watch makes it so it does not look too large on the wrist.

Suunto Core Ultimate Black

The Suunto Core is considered a military watch, but at first glance, may be confused with a smartwatch or Fitbit. But the Suunto Core is nothing like either watch. It is definitely a unique timepiece itself. Core features (no pun intended) include an altimeter, barometer, and a compass. The Core also has a built-in thermometer, storm alarm and tracks the sunrise and sunset. A must-have watch for a first date!

Innovation

What makes this watch worthy to be reviewed by myself, has to be all of the innovative features that were added to this piece. This is a MUST HAVE watch for any outdoor adventure and the all-black design make it easy to pair with any outfit you choose. It can be a bit hard to rid at times in dim lighting and is not as durable as a G-Shock; but then again, it is not as bulky and large as a G-Shock.

Suunto Traverse Alpha

I’d say the Traverse is much more on par with the durability standards of a G-Shock. The Suunto Traverse has a bold stainless steel bezel with a water repellant nylon strap. For extra durability, the watch also features a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal; which is usually found on top-notch watches! In short, the Traverse is a hunter and fishers gold mine. The watch has a built-in GPS, automatic shot detection, and a location-based moon phase calendar.

A Watch Made For a Hunter

Although I concluded that the G-Shock is the ultimate winner; there is an exception if you are a hunter. You can not beat all of the features added to this watch, it is literally made for a hunter. Hunting and fishing have never been easier and more fun than with the Suunto Traverse. No more worrying about getting lost in the middle of the woods.

Suunto 9 Watch

Fitness will never be the same…. (What’s a Fitbit)?

The Suunto 9 is more expensive compared to all of the other watches reviewed today. However, it is justified. This is a smartwatch that is more focused on fitness than other smartwatches on the market.  One of the coolest features is the sports expertise tracker. This little watch gives support for over 80 sports. The Suunto 9 also has an adjustable battery mode, which you can curate to make your battery life last as long as you need to. You have access to the Suunto app, so you can track all of your activity and log it for the future.

Smart-Sports Watch

The Suunto 9 is a great choice if sports are an important part of your life. It is also a watch that will always be reliable. You have up to 120 hours of battery life, Bluetooth connection, GPS built in, storm tracker. Basically, everything the last two Suunto watches have, but fused into a smartwatch. It is not as durable as the Traverse, but it does offer up to 100 meters of water resistance. Other than that, should be handled with a little more care.

Final Verdict

Casio and Suunto are two brands that are not usually compared with one another. Both are considered Military watches, due to military testing. Although I have no idea what they mean by that.

Anyway, when it comes down to it, G-Shock is a much more affordable, durable and traditional watch. Which is why I chose the brand as the ultimate winner. Suunto is more of a technologically advanced timepiece, rather than a watch. If the price is a deciding factor, G-Shock is your best option. If durability is a very important factor than once again, G-Shock is for you. But if innovation and technology is something that you are looking for in a watch, go for Suunto.

All of the watches reviewed above are highly regarded watches by each brand. If you do decide to purchase, make sure you buy from a reliable marketplace like Amazon!
