Highlights of this watch are definitely in the design. Of course, like all Eco-drive watches, the movement is controlled by light. Where this watch really shines (no pun intended) is the beautiful dial. The three black subdials feature 24 hour time, 1/10th seconds, and even a time zone feature. The power reserve on this bad boy is 270 days and it even has a built-in alarm.

Recommendation

If large-faced watches and complex designs are your forte; then this watch is for you! If large cases are not typically your thing, I would still try out this watch. For a large watch, it looks great.

In no way is this a normal watch. You can wear it with just about anything and it is sure to stimulate some great conversations! I recommend the Eco-Drive Chronograph to those who want a little more than your “average watch.”

You get the light-powered Eco-Drive Caliber E111 Japanese-quartz movement, with a power reserve up to 180 days! Once the battery begins to get low, the watch actually warns you that its time to charge. And unless you are a vampire, charging this watch shouldn’t be difficult.

Recommendation

Not everyone is into smaller, square-shaped cases. So this watch is not for everyone. But once you see this watch in person, you can appreciate its beauty. Because this watch has a unique design and great features (like a hardened mineral crystal to prevent scratches) I definitely recommend this watch. This timepiece tends to look great with dress attire, but wear it as you choose! I’m sure you’ll be happy with it though!

Wait until you hear all of the functionalities of this watch. A bi-directional rotating dial makes it so you can tell the time in ANY time zone. It also has a built-in, RX-GPS function. Some say it takes a minute or two to get started, but once it does it is FULLY FUNCTIONAL and a great addition to this timepiece.

THIS WATCH IS AMAZING. The technologies used in this watch make it worth the slightly higher price point. Not only is the watch beautiful, but it is functional, unique and of course, never needs batteries. A perfect watch for vacations and long road trips. Stealthy and Tactical

The G-Shock DW6900BB model does a great job of mixing digital and analog displays.

Perhaps the most standout feature of this G-Shock is its superior shock resistance. Casio has engineered a timepiece that suits the lifestyle of a police officer. Over the past several, this watch has received several impacts and exposure to moisture like you wouldn’t believe. The face is quite scratch-resistant as well.

The digital display is negative LCD which means that white font is used against a black background. My main concern with negative displays is legibility but I didn’t have such a problem with the DW6900BB. The electroluminescent (EL) backlighting works well for low light conditions.

The Black Out profile allows you to check the watch without giving away your position. This is, of course, a boon for officers during night operations.

The G-Shock DW6900BB watch is the very definition of a beater watch. It’s a heavy-duty timepiece with enough features to get you going.

I am quite a fan of Luminox, particularly of the 3050 Series. The Luminox 3051.BO Navy Seal Colormark 3050 Series is already on our list of the best military watches, so it’s no surprise that it’s found its way here.

Police officers need a watch that will survive the rough and tough nature of their profession. However, the watch needs to be lightweight enough so it will not be weighed down.

It’s a good thing that the Luminox 3051.BO Navy Seal Colormark is the Polycarbonate carbon-reinforced case and the durable mineral crystal that protects the watch from scratches.

This all adds up to a tough as nails watch but still manages to be lightweight.

A tough watch doesn’t have to be ugly, and I believe Luminox agrees. The Luminox 3051.BO is a beautiful watch and its black matte finish really adds a tactical feel to it. Unlike the previous watch, this timepiece boasts excellent luminosity. Whether you’re in darkness or underwater, you’ll have no problem reading the watch. Thanks to the tritium in the hands and markers.

Cops prefer a watch that they can just wear and forget – something that they can wear on a daily basis without worries. The Citizen BN0151-09L Promaster Professional Diver might be a dive model but it’s an excellent watch for everyday wear.

For a diver, the BN0151-09L Promaster is a lightweight watch. It’s easy to forget that you have it on as you about your duty. It has a thickness of about 12mm which is quite slim. You have the option of using the stock strap or the NATO, the latter will make the watch stand up more.

The Eco-Drive technology means that you don’t have to worry about changing the batteries.

The dial is perhaps my favorite part of the BN0151-09L Promaster. It just oozes cleanliness and all the design elements are well-arranged. The date window is located at 4 o’clock which is a nice break in tradition.

The watch is made of stainless steel. If you’re not a fan of brushed brass or plastic chassis, this is the best police watch for you. The steel construction adds a great deal of solidity to the watch. Based on my tests, it did well to repel most impacts.

4. Casio G-Shock GA 100-1A1 Military Series

Due to their inherent toughness and tactical features, there will be an overlap between police and military watches. Although the Casio G-Shock GA 100-1A1 Military Series is a watch that’s designed for military specifications, it’s also a solid choice for police officers.

Best Police Watch for the Money

The Casio G-Shock GA 100-1A1 Military Series is a classic tactical timepiece from Casio’s uber-popular G-Shock line.

Just from the look of the watch, you’ll know that it’s a tactical timekeeping tool. Like the previous G-Shock watch, this one comes with both analog and digital displays. The black matte finish is beautiful and adds a great deal to the watch’s sturdy look.

The black colorway means that you wear it outside of law enforcement duty. Like most G-Shocks, the GA 100-1A1 excels in durability, making it an ideal watch for hardworking officers of the law. The 10-year battery life also means that you’ll be wearing this watch for a long time.

However, the watch is far from perfect. For instance, it’s a fairly large watch that might turn off some people. The biggest drawback to this watch is definitely the legibility. The all-black face makes it harder to read in low light conditions and the LED light is not bright enough to illuminate the whole face.

Despite the shortcomings, the watch more than makes up for it with its excellent price point and overall reliability.

5. Seiko 5 Automatic

If you want the best police watch, you don’t have to settle with just the G-Shocks. The Seiko 5 Automatic looks and performs like a high-end watch but without the exorbitant price.

The Value Proposition

One look at the Seiko 5 and you’ll see that it’s an aviation-inspired timepiece.

The watch features a matte finish on the front and sides. The watch exudes an elegant military aesthetic and reminds me of some of the best pilot watches I’ve seen.

For this watch, legibility is the name of the game. There’s a lot going on with the dial but it’s not overly cramped or busy. Each of the white hour and the minute hand is applied with Seiko’s LumiBrite paint so you won’t have problems using this watch at night. The clean white lines not only adds to the legibility but also prevents the watch from looking generic.

It might be an elegant-looking timepiece but the Seiko 5 is a tough one. The Hardlex crystal does a great job of keeping scratches and bumps at bay. Plus, it features a fair water resistance rating.

Officers who are in the market for an aviation-inspired watch without the absurd price tag should check the Seiko 5 out.

6. Timex Expedition Gallatin

When it comes to tough watches, it’s hard to go wrong with Timex’s offering. The Expedition line is known for its excellent durability, reliability, and low price. The Timex Expedition Gallatin is an excellent and inexpensive all-rounder watch for members of the police force.

Police officers will surely appreciate the toughness offered by the Gallatin. The mineral glass is fairly scratch-resistant and the 100m water resistance means it’s good to wear for some water sports. The nylon strap adds another layer of ruggedness to the watch but it can get a bit stinky after some use.

Highly Functional and Reasonably-Priced

The Citizen AT0200-05E Eco-Drive Chronograph has been with me for quite a while and it continues to provide value.

This rugged stainless steel chronograph is very well-suited to everyday wear. As you might expect, the watch is quartz-powered by Citizen’s Eco-Drive solar charging technology. This means that you don’t have to worry about charging the watch. Simply leaving the watch by your windowsill gets the job done of charging, although indoor light works as well.

The pictures of the watch don’t do it justice. It looks better in person which is great if you’re planning to use this watch daily. Furthermore, the strap is quite robust and looks great for casual wear.

The AT0200-05E Eco-Drive Chronograph features three sub-dials that measure the hours, minutes, and seconds. The red seconds hand adds a good deal of depth to the dial. All in all, the dial itself is very legible despite the lack of significant texture.

Overall, the AT0200-05E Eco-Drive Chronograph is a durable, no-nonsense watch at a steal price.

For a bit of history, the Bulova Lunar Pilot was actually worn by astronaut Dave Scott during his time in the moon, replacing his NASA-issued Speedmaster. The Bulova Special Edition Lunar Pilot Chronograph is the recreation of that lunar classic.

Right off the bat, you know that you have something special on your wrist.

First, this is a stunning chronograph. The case features a wonderful satin finish that gives the watch an elegantly sporty look. The design is a noteworthy departure from the usual Bulova timepiece – this is certainly more of a tool watch than a dressy unit. The build quality is top-notch, especially for a sub-$500 watch.

At 45 mm, the Bulova Special Edition Lunar Pilot Chronograph is not a small watch. For most folks, the large size is a boon as it looks more fashionable. Fortunately, the large size doesn’t come with discomfort and weightiness.

The watch is powered by a high-performance UHF quartz movement. It vibrates 8 times faster than your usual conventional quartz timepiece. There’s not much that can be said here except that the accuracy is on-point.

Ultimately, the Lunar Pilot might be the other “moon watch” but it’s certainly a no-slouch affordable chronograph.

Sizable Dive Watch That Delivers

For starters, the Invicta 0070 Pro Diver is a huge and imposing watch. For that reason, the watch works well as a fashion piece. The stainless steel case is brushed and well-polished, and frankly, it looks great for a budget timepiece. Plus, the rugged construction provides the much-needed durability which is important for a dive watch.

The dial comes in marine blue which is always a nice aesthetic when it comes to dive watches. At first look, the dial may look a bit too crowded but I quickly came to realize the mindfulness of the layout. The three sub-dials are all highly readable, although two of them are partially obscured by the date window.

The watch also features skeleton hands which I am not too crazy about. The hands obscure the dial elements more than they need to. As for the movement, it is powered by a Chinese quartz movement which might seem like a drawback but it’s really not. As far as accuracy goes, I have no problem with the Invicta 0070 Pro Diver.

Overall, the Invicta 0070 Pro Diver is an ideal dive chronograph that’s budget-friendly without too many compromises.

4. Seiko SNN241 Stainless Steel

You can’t make a list of the best affordable chronograph watch without listing a piece from Seiko. The Seiko SNN241 Stainless Steel is a luxury dress watch without the exorbitant price.

Solid Dress Watch for the Price

First, let’s get out the drawback out of the way. The Seiko SNN241 Stainless Steel chronograph has a case diameter of 42 mm with a band width of 11 mm. Just by looking at the specs, it’s easy to tell that the watch will look bigger than you expect. It becomes even more apparent once you have it on your wrist.

For a dress watch, it is indeed large so keep that in mind.

Fortunately, the rest of the watch is fantastic. For instance, the construction of the Seiko SNN241 is top-notch. The stainless steel case, hardlex crystal, and contrast-stitched leather band all add up to solid and reliable timepiece.

In terms of timekeeping, there’s nothing revolutionary about it but everything is done accurately and consistently. The Japanese quartz movement, as you might expect, is highly accurate. Both the chronograph dials are working consistently as well. The leather band feels high-quality and comfortable, so no complaints about that.

Seiko did a good job of providing both class and amazing value with the Seiko SNN241 chronograph.

5. Timex Fly-Back Chronograph

Timex has plenty of great affordable chronograph watches from its lineup. Ultimately, I went with the Timex Fly-Back Chronograph due to its unique aesthetic and solid performance.

An Interesting Watch With Unique Complications

It’s hard to look at the Timex Fly-Back Chronograph and not be intrigued. One of the first things you’ll notice about the watch is its unique complication – the Fly-Back Chronograph Movement.

Instead of having two circular sub-dials, the watch features two half-circle displays that measure the minutes and hours. The Fly-Back mechanic is called as such because once the hands reach the end of the scale, they fly back to their starting position for another cycle.

Regardless of its functionality, I’m sold for its interesting complication alone.

With the unique complications, the watch also looks very interesting and aviation-inspired. The dial looks very complicated but it’s not a big deal once you get used to it. It looks elegant and sporty at the same time. The leather strap is a bit thick but it’s well-stitched and comfortable.

Wrapping up, the Timex Fly-Back Chronograph is greater than the sum of its parts. With its current sale price, this is one of the best Timex chronographs that you can get.

6. Casio MTP4500D-1AV Slide Rule Bezel Aviator

Casio isn’t known for their chronographs but that doesn’t mean they don’t have one. The Casio MTP4500D-1AV Slide Rule Bezel Aviator is a well-made chronograph with an amazingly low-price.

Walks and Talks Like a $200 Watch

The Casio MTP4500D-1AV has made it into this list of the best affordable chronograph watch because it’s a steal. It looks and feels like a $200 watch but it’s a bargain timepiece through and through.

The quality of the construction is surprisingly solid and consistent. I am not normally a fan of mirror finishes but I don’t mind it here. Fortunately, it’s very easy to swap out the stainless steel bracelet with a different one – I replaced mine with a NATO strap.

The dial is also very interesting, mainly due to the design of the sub-dials. Personally, I am not too thrilled with the minutes sub-dial which displays a large 60 at the top portion and a large 30 at the bottom. This leads to confusion when trying to tell the minutes when the hands are near these positions.

Overall, the Casio MTP4500D-1AV is a great beater chronograph with a crazy value proposition.

Since this is a G-Shock model, there’s no surprise (or rather a shock) here when it comes to inherent toughness. Casio’s construction is always on-point. The watch feels appropriately weighty and it just provides a solid feel overall. You just know that it’s a watch that won’t fail you in the field.

The G-Shock Rescue Concept comes with a decent list of features such as moon/tide graphs, auto EL backlight, low temp LCD, flash alert, world time, and daily alarm. It’s no Tactix Charlie or the Suunto Traverse Alpha but it’s hard to go wrong with the price.

Citizen’s Eco-Drive collection has always impressed me. They’re some of the most robust and well-respected watches in the industry. The Citizen BM8180-03E Eco-Drive is no exception.

The Citizen BM8180-03E Eco-Drive is one of the best-selling watches on Amazon, and it’s not surprising at all.

The BM8180-03E is a military-inspired watch and a stylish one at that. While it’s indeed a rugged military watch, it features a nice and clean design. The army green color scheme of the strap contrasts rather well with the stainless steel case and black dial.

Speaking of the dial, I love the BM8180-03E’s black dial. It’s just so clean and immediately readable. The red second hand adds an interesting contrast against the black dial face. Plus, you can easily use the seconds from timing a patient’s pulse and the like. When things get dark, the hands and numerals are lumed and it’s is pretty good.

Being an Eco-Drive model, the BM8180-03E is solar powered and it’s one of the better solar-powered watches available. It can be charged both in sunlight and artificial light sources like lamps. In case you run out of solar power, the watch also comes with a reserve battery which is a nice bonus.

With that said, the dial features large Arabic numbers and a bright red second hand, emphasizing “at a glance” readability. True enough, the Speidel Scrub Watch boasts excellent readability regardless of the lighting conditions. The bright red second hand comes in handy when counting a patients pulse or breathing.

In the 1970s, Japanese watchmakers have taken the world of the watch industry by storm. This was largely in part due to the Quartz Revolution and the world of watches was changed forever. Japan is famous for making some of the best bang-for-the-buck timepieces in the industry.

This is especially true when it comes to dive watches.

If you are in the market for a new dive watch that won’t break the bank, you’ll likely end up choosing watches from Citizen and Seiko. Both are Japanese brands and from the initial look, there’s plenty of similarities between the two dive watch brands.

Today, I have the unenviable job of comparing Citizen vs Seiko dive watches. Which dive watch brand is better? Let’s find out!

Citizen vs Seiko Dive Watches: Head-to-Head Comparison

Style and Design

When you look at both Citizen and Seiko dive watches, you’ll probably think that both watches look fairly similar. However, once you really observe the divers from both brands, you’ll see the distinct differences.

In general, Seiko divers tend to look more like the classic dive watches. For example, the Seiko Men’s SKX009K2 features the same design aesthetic as the classic Submariner. Many of their dive watches feature a vintage style and design but never looking outdated.

Also, the popular Prospex collection boasts the “land explorer” look with high legibility, sleek smooth design, and congested motion. It’s worth noting that the Prospex collection has many variants that are not limited to dive watches. Seiko also has the Seiko Grand collection for those who are looking for a more high-end watch.

On the other hand, Citizen also offers watches that have that unmistakable vintage design. However, unlike Seiko, Citizen seems to push the envelop more when it comes to its design philosophy. You can find many Citizen pieces that look more creative, experimental even.

For construction and durability, Citizen vs Seiko dive watches can definitely go toe-to-toe with each other. For the crystals, Citizen tends to use mineral crystals while Seiko utilizes its patented Hardlex crystals. Both crystals are very impact resistant but I’ve found that both crystals are easily scratched.

For the materials, both dive watch brands don’t use precious metals (gold, platinum, etc.) for making the watches. Both brands use stainless steel for most of their dive watches which is not a problem at all. If you want a piece that uses precious metals, you might want to look into the Seiko Grand line.

Based on our tests, the bracelet of Citizen dive watches is better when compared to Seiko. This is hardly an extensive test but Citizen bracelets were more comfortable and durable than Seiko bracelets.

I’ve been doing some reading online and it seems that there’s an argument that Citizen has the upper hand in terms of production quality. However, there’s no definitive proof of this but I do know that both watches have a history of producing excellent quality watches for less.

Water Resistance

Of course, you can’t talk about dive watches without mentioning their water resistance rating. Which dive watch brand is the better diving tool? On average, I think that the two brands are fairly comparable with regards to water resistance rating. Both brands have models that can handle the standard 200 meters of depth. These dive watches are good for the average diver.

However, if you’re somewhat of a professional diver, Citizen has the leg up versus Seiko. Citizen has the Promaster 1000M Professional Diver which has a rating of 1000M/100Bar and perfect for serious scuba diving. Seiko also has a 1000 meter dive watch in the form of SBDX014G Marinemaster but it’s far more expensive when compared to Citizen’s offering.

Overall, both brands cater to a wide range of diving needs.

Features and Technology

When it comes to the best dive watches, I always check the illuminated hands. After all, you’re hundreds of meters down the ocean, so you want a watch that you can actually read – good illumination helps with that. In that regard, I think Seiko has the advantage over Citizen with the former’s LumiBrite hands/markers. It just works better, even in bright daylight.

In the matters of diving features, Seiko divers come with Kinetic and Spring Drive Technologies. The original Kinetic technology has been a point of success for Seiko but it does have some practical shortcomings. For instance, you need to wear the watch or oscillate in your hands to charge it. On the other hand, the Spring Drive movement melds the benefits of both automatic and quartz movements. It’s a mechanical movement with the accuracy of quartz.

On the flip side, Citizen uses Japanese quartz movement for most of its divers. There’s a couple of Citizen divers that also come with Atomic timekeeping which further enhances accuracy. However, the biggest advantage of Citizen dive watches is Eco-Drive technology. This technology powers watches from any natural/artificial light source and converts light to energy. That’s right, you won’t ever have to replace batteries with Eco-Drive timepieces.

For timekeeping and general features, Seiko has the upper hand when it comes to overall accuracy while Citizen comes out on top if you prefer a solar-powered watch.

As mentioned, both Citizen and Seiko are known for affordable, high-quality dive watches. As far as pricing goes, Citizen and Seiko have very similar price ranges and both cater to a wide range of budgets. You can get a reliable dive watch with a $200-$300 price tag from both brands.

The main difference between the two is with the highest-end offering. The Seiko Prospex SBDX014G Marinemaster is available for $3,000+ while the Citizen Promaster 1000M Professional Diver comes with a $2,000+ price tag.
