Best Tide Watches for Fishing

1. Casio G7900-1 G-Shock Rescue

The Casio G7900-1 G-Shock Rescue Watch is a solid option for fishermen who don’t want to spend a fortune on a tide watch.

Being a G-Shock model, this watch boasts a ruggedness that you can expect from G-Shocks. It doesn’t offer that many in terms of features but what it brings into the table are more than enough for even the most jaded fishermen.

A Tough Tide Watch

The main draw of the Casio G7900-1 G-Shock is definitely its tough as a rock design and construction. If you’re planning to use a watch anywhere near bodies of water, you need a timepiece that will get the job done without breaking down.

The 50mm case is made from the standard G-Shock resin which is a bit large even for G-Shock standards. Thus, this watch will likely look bigger on smaller wrists. However, the watch is surprisingly lightweight and is actually comfortable even after wearing it for hours. The enlarged buttons are a nice touch since it makes the watch a lot easier to use.

The watch is water resistant to 660 ft or 200 m. Of course, the watch features a moon phase (8 segments) and a tide graph (6 segments) – these are the features that you need for the best fishing experience. It utilizes the Japanese Quartz movement which is rather disappointing. I would have preferred atomic timekeeping.

Overall, this is a great outdoor timepiece and is a good place to start your search for the best tide watch.

2. Suunto Traverse Alpha

The Suunto Traverse Alpha is one my favorite watches to use to brave the great outdoors.

Using the Suunto Traverse Alpha is like having an assistant that feeds you with information that’s vital to your fishing trips. It is mainly an outdoor GPS watch but it offers some amazing features that will be useful for any fishing enthusiast.

It boasts great accuracy that you can expect from a high-end smartwatch.

High-End Accuracy

While there are certainly issues with the Traverse Alpha, you can’t really fault the watch in terms of accuracy. The Moon Phase calendar feature is location based so you can easily determine the best time to go fishing. This is obviously a plus if you wish to go fishing at night.

The watch also lets you set specific points of interests to mark trails and the best fishing spots you’ll find. The sunrise/sunset alerts do a great job of helping you plan your fishing day. The watch also comes with a barometric pressure graph that will alert you if there’s an incoming storm or any other weather changes.

Of course, the built-in GPS and GLONASS systems will make navigation a breeze.

On top of its great outdoor features, the Traverse Alpha comes in a scratch-resistant display and bacteria-resistant straps. So you can take this bad boy out while fishing and not worry about a thing.

3. Rip Curl Rifles

The Rip Curl Rifles Waterproof Digital Tide Watch was designed to be used for aquatic sports such as canoeing and surfing. However, it comes with features that make it a must for any fishing trip.

Basically, it’s a great watch for just about any water person.

Don’t Expect Fireworks

Just to be clear, the Rifles is not a smartwatch so don’t expect smart features on it. Despite that, it works the way it should. It has your standard alarm, stopwatch, and countdown features.

However, what makes the Rip Curl Rifles a solid tide watch is that it provides tide data at a glance.

There are two modes for displaying tide information: Graph and Detailed. For the Graph view, it provides the user with “at a glance” tide display which is unique for each location. The actual tide heights are displayed 8 hours into the future and 2 hours before. The Detailed view shows the current tide height and direction which also include the numeric time and height of the tide.

The watch is very stylish too and I won’t have a qualm wearing this as a fashion statement. It is rugged but still manages to be comfortable. This watch comes highly recommended for anyone who likes spending their time near bodies of water.

4. Casio AQW101-1AV

I struggled not to include another Casio product on this list. But alas, there’s just so many Casio watches out there that could make a case for being the best tide watch.

The Casio AQW101-1AV is definitely a good contender.

Dedicated Fishing Mode

This is yet another budget-friendly tide watch but it offers enough features that elevate it from just being a cheap piece. For starters, the AQW101-1AV is water resistant to 200 meters. So if you are anywhere near water, you don’t have to worry about splashing water onto the watch.

What makes this watch a good fishing option is the dedicated Fishing Mode. Instead of learning the Lunar calendar and the feeding schedule of the fishes, you can simply check your watch and see what it says. If you can see fish on your watch, there’s a good chance that you’re in for a bountiful fishing session. There’s also the moon data which comes in handy if you’re fishing at night.

Outside of its fishing features, the AQW101-1AV is pretty much a standard watch complete with timekeeping features like 30 time zones (50 cities), city code display, daylight saving, countdown timer and more.

The watch does have a bit of a learning curve so make sure that you spend some time reading the manual before taking it out for a spin.

5. Sunroad FR830

In terms of usability and features, the Sunroad FR830 Tide Watch won’t exactly blow your mind. The other watches from this list have significantly more features than this Sunroad watch.

However, when strictly talking about fishing, this timepiece is an easy recommendation to even the most jaded anglers.

Multi-function Tide Fishing Watch

The Sunroad Tide Watch is an ABC smartwatch that provides a list of decent features. Being an ABC watch, it comes with an altimeter, barometer, and an electronic compass. I’ve been trying this tide watch for quite some time and I must that that it’s fairly accurate. The compass feature can be a little spotty at times but overall, the ABC features work great.

The watch is clearly designed for sea anglers. It displays tidal data and moon’s age and phase charts for 400 city ports. The watch can also warn anglers for any change in weather or barometric pressure which is invaluable if you’re out in the sea.

The Sunroad FR830 is also a very stylish timepiece. I am a fan of the all-black design and legibility is never an issue since it’s completely backlit. The only downside that I do mind is that it’s only waterproof to 50 meters. Thus, it’s only good for handwashing and showering. Don’t even think about diving with this watch.

Overall, the Sunroad FR830 is not just a solid tide fishing watch, it’s a great outdoor companion as a whole.

Final Thoughts

It wasn’t easy but we’ve just handpicked some of the best tide watches that you can buy in the market.

We stand by our top pick which is the Casio G7900-1 G-Shock Rescue. However, it’s certainly hard to go wrong with any of these tide watches and they are worth the investment.

Have fun with your fishing adventures!

The Best Field Watches of 2019

Best field watches

The birth of field watches, along with wristwatches in general, is usually tied to World War I and the need for accuracy and durability during wartime. For any explorer, hard worker or person who loves the outdoors, a field watch is a fantastic and sometimes necessary accessory.

Best Affordable Field Watches in 2019

Field watches are for those on the move and who have important things to do. So, we’ll cut to the chase. Our favorite field watch out of this list is the Timex Men’s Expedition Field Chronograph Watch. Durability and price are two very important factors, which is why we find this to be such a great watch. If you’d like to learn more about this watch and some of our other picks, continue reading!

1. Timex Men’s Expedition Field Chronograph Watch

This Timex Men’s Expedition Field Chronograph watch is a beautiful vintage field watch. With a lot of technology combined with its leather, classically rugged appearance, this watch looks like an adventurer’s treasured keepsake. The watch has an analog display with quartz movement, protected by a mineral dial window. The case is 43mm and made of brass. The band is made of genuine calfskin leather. A nice feature is that a date window sits at the 4-o’clock marker. The watch is also water resistant up to 330 feet, allowing for a lot of water activity.

This watch seems to be particularly loved for its style and accuracy—mostly because it is very affordable. There are few great chronograph field watches you can find for this price.

Potential Negatives

The leather band, while stylistically a great addition to this watch, might be a bit lighter than some would prefer. It was also mentioned that this watch may not look as large in person as it does in pictures, especially for those with larger wrists

2. Timex Men’s Expedition Scout 40

The Timex Men’s Expedition Scout 40 is a classic field watch for those who want something reliable but on a budget. The 20mm strap is a military-esque green nylon slip-thru. The dial is black with easy-to-see luminous hands. It has 12 or 24-hour time and the date. The 40mm case and the bezel are brass. This watch is water resistant up to 165-feet. Many love the simple design and the well-lit, illuminated features of this watch.

Potential Negatives

While most appreciate this watch and are shocked at its high quality—despite its low price—there are a few concerns. First of all, some say that the band can get a bit frayed after a while. Second, the time may need to be adjusted too often.

3. Hamilton Men’s Khaki Field Watch

Hamilton’s FH70455733 Khaki field watch is a wonderful watch option for those that love a classic, vintage style. It has an automatic self-wind movement and analog display that is protected with a sapphire crystal dial window. The 38mm case is stainless steel, the band is made of black calfskin with distinctive contrast stitching, and it has a dual time display. A date box sits on the 3 o’clock marker. The watch is also water resistant up to 330-feet for anyone who is into aquatic activities.

While this watch is on the expensive side, it is also made extremely well and provides great style to its wearer. One of the key features of this watch is the fact that while it is a field watch, you can easily dress it up for a fancy dinner or simply take it hiking. For anyone who works an office job but loves to spend their free time in the great outdoors, without worrying about switching up their accessories, this is a great choice.

Potential Negatives

A possible buyer needs to understand the size of this watch before purchasing, as a few reviewers mentioned it was smaller than they thought—case and band. With current styles promoting many large watches, it may be a bit of an adjustment.

4.  Bertucci A-2T Vintage Watch

This Bertucci A-2T Vintage Watch is a great blend of quality and durability. The 42mm case is made with a strong but lightweight titanium. The movement is Swiss made all-metal quartz and the hands and markers are luminous for the wearer to easily see the time in different lighting.

Many reviewers loved the nylon band. They thought they’d want to replace it for various reasons but after breaking it in a bit, the band was comfortable and fit well. Overall, this is a durable and attractive watch that could be dressed up if needed.

Potential Negatives

Reviewers mentioned a few issues concerning the luminosity in the hands not lasting very long. There are also not a lot of frills to this watch. It is simple but does the job and as long as buyers understand that, they should enjoy their purchase.

5.  AVI-8 AV-4003 Hawker Harrier II Stainless Steel Watch

For the air, land or water, the AVI-8 Hawker Harrier IIis a beautiful, durable and highly unique watch. It has a dramatic aviator style that draws the eye to it immediately. The analog movement is Japanese quartz. The 45mm case, along with the bezel, is stainless steel. The band is calfskin distressed-looking leather that creates a rugged look. On the band are stylish studs that again, draw attention.

The most defining factor of the watch is its face with sundials in an aviation-inspired aesthetic. The hands are easily visible as well. Durable for the outdoors, styled for a pilot and water resistant to 165-feet, this watch is great for a variety of personalities who want a unique style with an ability to fit into many settings.

Potential Negatives

Some reviewers mentioned that setting the time on this piece can be a bit tricky.

FAQs

What is a Field Watch?

As mentioned earlier, field watches became popular with the world wars because of a higher need for reliable accuracy in timekeeping. In general, those who enjoy the great outdoors or work in an area that requires precision in a long-lasting timepiece will gravitate towards the field watch. This is because a field watch is made to be a hardworking person’s companion. Consequently, it’s also made to serve many functions, often including a timer, long-lasting battery, precise time-keeping, water resistance, durability and more.

What Makes a Good Field Watch?

There are a lot of watches to suit a lot of personalities. Therefore, someone who needs a reliable field watch will, again, need accuracy and durability and their style. Additionally, the watch needs to suit them personally. This will be a piece worn through hard work and hopefully great adventure. It needs to be something easily readable, trustworthy for whatever job it’ll contribute to, and it must suit its wearers aesthetic.

Considerations

Know What Type of Field Watch You Want

There are a lot of field watches that put more emphasis on a specific environment in which you may find yourself. Are you a scuba diver? You may need a watch that is more water-proof. Same if you find yourself more in the air than on land.

There are a lot of great styles and a lot of great options available. You can find the perfect accessory for you and your lifestyle. As a result, you need to know what you want so that you can find it.

Another question you should ask yourself is: “what style will suit your life the best?” Should your watch blend into a business or professional work environment and then lend its fantastic functions when you go spelunking on vacation? Or are you a full-time outdoorsman who just needs the most out of their watch?

Decide How much you should Invest in Your Watch

Watches can range from a solid 20 bucks to a couple thousand! Make sure you decide what kind of money you’re comfortable investing.

  • Are you a watch aficionado who can tell from a cursory glance what metal was used for a watch case? Maybe you should trust your instincts and spend a bit more money if you have it.
  • Are you an avid explorer who needs the best of the best timekeeping devices to ensure a safe trip? Getting a top-of-the-line watch may just be a safety precaution and should be considered.
  • Or, do you want a reliable and quality watch but can’t quite tell the difference between a more expensive watch and a cheaper option…and don’t really care? Cheaper may be best for you, my friend.

Good watches can last you many, many years and they can be affordable. However, the choice to invest in a more expensive option could be a good decision long-term. Investing in quality is always a great idea if you have the money. Field watches—especially ones that you intend to take on rough, tough adventures should align with what you need and can afford.

Conclusion

Field watches are a great option for many people and whatever lifestyle they live. Therefore, check out some of these field watches and then wear your choice while doing something exciting!

Our favorite, again, is the Timex Expedition Field Chronograph but if it doesn’t suit you, there are a lot of other great options.

Best Compass Watch: Reliable Navigation Tools for Outdoor Adventurers

Best Compass Watch

Due to modern navigation technology and GPS, a smartphone is all you need for navigating your way around.

However, if you’re an avid outdoorsman who loves to go camping, hiking or hunting, it’s best that you have a dedicated navigational tool with you at all times – preferably one that doesn’t require Wi-Fi or batteries.

With that said, it’s hard to go wrong with a compass watch as a dedicated navigation tool.

If you are looking for the best compass watch, you’ve come to the right place. For our top pick, we chose the Casio Pathfinder PAG240-1CR Multi-Function Sport Watch for its wide range of features, ease of use, and great price. This watch comes highly recommended for sports and outdoor enthusiasts.

If you are looking for more options, we have handpicked a couple of other models for you to check out.

Best Compass Watch

1. Casio Pathfinder PAG240-1CR Tough Solar Watch

The Casio Pathfinder PAG240-1CR is a shining example of how to do a compass watch while incorporating other high-end features. Over the years, Casio’s Pathfinder series has earned the legendary status among sports and outdoor lovers.

It’s a full-featured compass watch that stands out because it is solar-powered.

Feature Packed Timepiece

What I love about the Pathfinder PAG240-1CR is that it offers a lot in terms of features. Of course, the watch comes with a digital compass which should be more than enough for most navigational needs. On top of that, the watch comes with an altimeter, barometer, and thermometer.

Thus, it’s quite obvious that this watch is designed for sports and outdoor enthusiasts.

For timekeeping, the timepiece has world time, five daily alarms, city code display, 1/100-second stopwatch, countdown timer, full auto calendar (pre-programmed until 2099), and 12/24-hour formats.

It’s about what you can expect from a standard Casio sports watch.

Battery life is a whopping 6 months on a full charge, provided that the watch is not exposed to light. The 51-mm stainless steel case is suitably tough for any outdoor activities. It’s also water resistant to 100 m (330 ft) which is a nice bonus. The watch is also backlit and performs rather well in the dark.

2. SUUNTO Core All Black Military Watch

The SUUNTO Core All Black Military is a solid ABC watch (altimeter, barometer, compass). I have only been introduced to Suunto as of late but the brand is definitely growing on me. They make some of the best-looking sports and outdoor watches in the market.

SUUNTO Core All Black Military Watch is no exception.

A Tough Watch for Braving the Great Outdoors

This SUUNTO watch feels solid and tough but it doesn’t feel clunky, heavy or cumbersome. That in itself is a great plus since I don’t like wearing watches that would weigh me down. It doesn’t hurt that the watch looks great and I am in love with the black face.

The watch offers features that make it an essential part of one’s every day carry.

Like with the previous watch, the SUUNTO Core All Black Military comes with a digital compass. I’ve played around with the compass and I am happy to report that it’s very accurate. The barometer is also working as advertised and it actually gave an accurate storm warning.

The watch is available for a great price. However, if you are looking for a GPS watch, you will want to skip this one since it doesn’t come with a GPS.

Despite the lack of GPS, this is one of the best compass watches that you can buy.

3. Casio Pro Trek PRW2500T Tough Solar Digital Watch

We have another model from Casio which is not surprising considering that this is a Pro Trek watch.

The Pro Trek series is a very popular collection of watches that has really made its mark on the sports and outdoor niche. The Pro Trek series is actually developed under the supervision of meteorologists to ensure accurate readings and the inclusion of useful features.

Reliable Outdoor Companion

This solar-powered Casio Pro Trek PRW2500T features a rugged which is fitting for a traveler’s timepiece. It doesn’t just look tough however, the PRW2500T is one sturdy beast.

After all, it’s described by Casio as “a watch that never breaks.” It can withstand high impact and water pressure.

As with many of Casio’s mid-range military watches, the PRW2500T features atomic timekeeping technology. For U.S. citizens, this means that the watch receives calibrating radio waves straight from Fort Collins to ensure that the watch is accurate down right to the millisecond.

As for the compass, I must say that it performed “OK” and served me well for the most part. However, it’s not as accurate as most handheld military compasses. The screen is crystal clear and quite easy to read.

However, the buttons can be hard to operate in low light conditions. Another downside to this watch is that the bezel scratches easily.

4. Timex T49612 Expedition Shock Digital Compass Watch

The Timex T49612 Expedition Shock is a great choice if you’re looking for an inexpensive EDC watch that can withstand all kinds of punishment.

Timex has always been a reliable brand that won’t break the bank. The T49612 is an excellent military watch that comes with a digital compass.

An EDC Watch for Adventuring

One of the first things you’ll notice straight away is the Expedition Shock’s bold negative display.

As you can see, legibility is not an issue even if you’re out in the wild. Whenever it gets too dark, the Indiglo light-up watch dial has got you covered. The watch face looks a bit big, it’s bigger than your average Casio G-Shock.

As you can expect from a military timepiece, the Expedition Shock sports an extremely rugged design and construction, down to the overbuilt hinges and flat buttons. It is water resistant to 200m (660 ft) and is actually well-suited for surface water sports and other marine activity except for scuba diving.

The compass is spot on but you will likely spend a bit of time with the calibration. I’ve found that the compass works best for determining direction and orientation. In terms of navigation, it’s unfortunately not as accurate. I have to knock down a point since the band tends to snap or break down.

Overall, it’s a budget-friendly compass watch that’s great for everyday use.

5. Garmin Instinct GPS Watch

If you don’t mind spending the big bucks, the Garmin Instinct GPS Watch is for you. Based on our tests, the Instinct features by far the best compass within this list.

Of course, being a GPS watch, it comes with major navigation features which are clearly aimed for the hardcore outdoor adventurers. Plus, it also comes with sports features that are similar to that of the Vivoactive 3. If you are familiar with the Garmin Fenix, think of this watch as the mini-Fenix.

High-End Navigation Tool

Being a Garmin device, the Instinct excels when it comes to navigation features.

It boasts a built-in 3-axis compass which takes out the guesswork from keeping your bearings while outdoors. One particular feature that I like is the TracBack feature which allows you to easily backtrack to the same route from where you came.

The watch comes with a barometric altimeter for providing incoming storm alerts. There’s also the GPS along with the GLONASS and Galileo support which provides the user with plenty of coverage. Basically, the Instinct places a big emphasis on features that would be very useful to hikers, trekkers, and hunters.

The Instinct features a successful rugged design and is thermal, shock and water resistant. The fiber-reinforced polymer case does a great job of protecting the watch. Unfortunately, the watch itself really isn’t much of a looker. Maybe it’s just me but I don’t really like the Instinct’s look.

It does come in 3 different colors, if that counts.

Like most smartwatches, the Instinct syncs with the Garmin app which is always a nice feature. Seriously, I could be here all day talking about the Instinct’s features.

If you want a full-featured GPS watch and don’t mind spending more, it’s hard to go wrong with the Garmin Instinct.

Final Thoughts

That wraps up our list of the best compass watch that you can get for your navigation needs.

Each of these watches has their own set of useful features as well as pros and cons. You can trust that all the watches on this list have a great compass. For some reason that you can’t choose between the options we’ve provided, we highly recommend that you get the Casio Pathfinder PAG240-1CR.

Have fun shopping for your compass watch!

Top Smart Watches for the Strava App

Suunto Spartan Sport

You can not go wrong with the Spartan Sport. Not only is this a smartwatch, but it is literally made for the active runner.

When it comes to style, durability, and overall functionality, it is no question that the Spartan Sport takes the cake. Take your mind off cake though… We have some calories to burn.  Quick points to cover why the Spartan Sport reigns supreme: up to 12 hours of battery life, beautiful steel bezel with many colorway options, and easy connection with the Strava app. It could not be any simpler to set up your watch to the app.

Best Features in a Sport Watch

Not only can you easily sync to your Strava app to track your run, but you can also track over 80 other sports and activities on the Suunto Spartan Sport.  If you enjoy running in the evening, after the sun sets, no worries. The Spartan Sport offers easy visibility with it’s “art color” touch, which can be easily seen in the dimmest of light.

At the end of the day, with the Spartan Sport, you get the most accurate data about daily activity levels, a durable watch that is built for outdoors, features that are unique to the Spartan and a great looking watch.

Top Features

  • Sapphire Glass, Durable Steel Bezel
  • Control over watch battery life (adjusting GPS tracking frequency)
  • Accurate heart rate monitor
  • Easily syncs with Strava Via Suunto app or in Movescount

Garmin Vivo Active 3

Garmin is known for creating great GPS and tracking devices. They did an excellent job with the Vivo Active.

Functionality wise, Garmin is pretty close to the Spartan Sport. However, it falls short in a few areas, a big one being the design and build. The Garmin Vivo Active 3 has a basic look, with nothing spectacular about the bezel or case. It is a good watch for those who are more of a minimalist. The one unique feature that stands out with the design, is the ability to change the face of your watch with thousands of options to choose from.

On to what makes the Garmin VivoActive 3 AWESOME! Like previously mentioned, the Vivo Active has a lot of similar features as the Spartan Sport: long battery life, V02 tracker and many sports trackers.

Garmin excels in making GPS functions. So you know you are getting an accurate GPS when purchasing a Garmin watch.  It is definitely a comfortable watch. Although not that stylish, the band is VERY comfortable on the wrists. Owners of the Vivo Active rave about the comfort of the watch.

An Everyday Watch

Comfort is definitely a top priority to make a watch an “everyday” watch. But otherwise, the watch is also very easy to use and provides features that are important for everyday use. You can sync to Strava straight from Garmin Beacon, and stay connected unless you decide to cancel.

Garmin pay is an added feature that lets you make purchases with your watch (need to stop for a bottle of water, you can pay straight from your Garmin)! Overall, the Vivo Active is a top choice for the everyday watch. One you can wear even after you are done with your run, swim, yoga class etc…

Top Features

  • Comfortable band, light build, easy to take off
  • Stress level indicator (see their website for details)
  • Customizable Face
  • Truly waterproof (up to 50M)
  • Easily syncs with Strava

Samsung Gear S3

Nothing beats the design of the Samsung Gear 3. It is a smartwatch that you would never guess is a smartwatch.

At first glance, you would never guess that the Gear 3 was a smartwatch. The distinctive stainless steel bezel resembles the high-quality bezels of a dive watch. Customize the face of your watch with a realistic dial, that can mimic any automatic watch you would like.

The functionality is similar to the Spartan Sport and Vivo Active, yet not as robust. You can count on the GPS, the accelerometer for counting repetitions with cross-fit activities and the updates from the watch that entice you to get moving. (If you have not been active, the watch will update you to get in a run or a workout). That is a feature that those leaning more on the lazy spectrum should have.

All In the Design

The design and look of the Samsung Gear S3 is the main reason why it is number 3 on today’s review. Other than that, the watch performs well, is quite durable and syncs with the Strava app. This is a top choice for those who look for style in their smartwatch, rather than pure functionality.

Top Features

  • Stainless steel bezel
  • Durability
  • Smart updates to keep you active and track fitness benchmarks
  • Sync to Strava straight from the Samsung Health app

Garmin Forerunner 235

Garmin makes the list yet again. The Forerunner 235 is a good choice for those seeking an affordable and innovative smartwatch.

The Garmin Forerunner makes today’s list because of its accurate GPS tracking, a wrist-based heart rate monitor, large display and comfort. If you are looking for an all-around smartwatch like the Samsung Gear S3, go with the Samsung. The Forerunner 235 is not great with smartwatch features. It shines in the ability to track runs and to be your fitness companion.

Because of the focus on running and sports activities, the watch is perfect for those who are more concerned with the fitness capabilities. The battery life is GREAT; current owners claim they can run 18-25 miles a week on 2 charges.

A True Fitness Watch

The best way to describe the Garmin Forerunner 235, is a true fitness watch. It does not have any fancy features like many other smartwatches, it simply tracks your fitness goals.

When it comes to counting steps, runs, calories burnt and alert motivator to get you up and running, the Garmin Forerunner 235 excels. This is a TOP pick for those who want a reliable and durable fitness watch.

Of course, the watch syncs with the Strava app easily, hence why it is on the list.

Top Features

  • Robust activity tracking
  • Long lasting battery life (longest on the list)
  • Comfortable and easy to read
  • Syncs with Strava App

Apple Watch Series 3

Lastly, we have one of the most popular, and one of the first smartwatches. The Apple Watch series 3.

Apple is one of the biggest names in EVERY tech industry. It is no surprise that they create some of the best smartwatches. The Apple Watch Series 3 comes in last place today because of a few key factors.

For one: the Apple watch is a true smartwatch. Yes, it can track your fitness goals, but the main use case for an Apple watch is owning a smart computer, that can sync easily with iPhones and keep the user up to date straight from the wrist

What makes it great is definitely the all-around use of the watch.  Similar to the Vivo Active, it is a comfortable everyday watch. To be honest, if you own an iPhone, this may be the NUMBER ONE pick for you. I say that because rather than spending money on two smartwatches; you can have it all with Apple.

The True Smartwatch

Apple is continuing to advance the fitness tracking abilities of their smartwatches. As of today, the series 3 is a decent watch for heartbeat monitoring, trail tracking, and total steps. When compared to other watches on the list,  it falls a bit short.

Where it shines, is all of the other capabilities that are innovative and highly advanced. iPhone owners will love how easy the Apple Watch syncs with their phones, and keeps them up to date with all notifications. Runners will enjoy the easy syncing process with Strava.

Top Features

  • Everyday use for iPhone users
  • Comfort and high tech design
  • Music streaming (for runners who enjoy music while running)
  • Syncs with Strava App

The Final Verdict

When it comes to smartwatches for runners, it is not a simple process to rate a watch. There are many factors that determine which watch is best for an individual, my goal was to help lead you towards the top 5.

At the end of the day, the choice is yours. You will be happy with any watch that you choose; they are all highly-regarded on Amazon and by yours truly!

When purchasing a watch, make sure you go to a trusted retailer like Amazon, to ensure you get an authentic watch.

Happy watch shopping everyone!

Firefighters have an extremely important job- they protect the public and risk their lives every day for the well being of society.  If you are reading this as a veteran firefighter, or a new firefighter, I want to let you know how much I respect your work.

Top Five Watches for Firefighters 2019

German Military Titanium Watch

If it is built for military use. You know it could be used for firefighting as well. This is an amazing watch that is highly regarded and a perfect piece for any firefighter!

The German Military Titanium Watch GPW has a strong, tough look to it at first glance. It is similar in aesthetics to a dive watch, and that is definitely a compliment. If you decide to purchase this watch you will be more than happy to hear that it is literally the perfect watch for a firefighter.

The titanium build is not only strong but built to withstand anything that comes in its way. Not only is the case a powerhouse, but it is also lightweight titanium that does not bother the wrist with wear. This is a bulky watch that is actually really comfortable.

The Best Pick For The Active Firefighter

Not only is this timepiece durable and comfortable. But it also includes features that are very important for the job of a firefighter. Never miss a second with the bright, luminescent dial with an easy to see red ticking second hand. Whether it is dark out, or very sunny, the anti-reflective sapphire crystal ensures that you can view the dial no matter what!

The wristband is made out of a comfortable rubber material that fits the firefighter look, and will not absorb water or sweat. So no smelly or wet wristband on this piece.

Top Features

  • SandBlasted Titanium Case
  • Reliable, Easy to read Swiss Quartz Movement
  • Extremely Great Value
  • Simple, Yet Stylish enough Design for Everyday Wear

G-Shock Mud Master

You can not have a durable watch review without including at least one G-shock. The Mud Master is top-notch when it comes to durability and great for the everyday fireman.

With a G-Shock, you know what you are paying for. Shock resistant material, mineral glass, mud, and water resistant. All of the perks you would look for in a durable watch.

The look of the watch is rugged, tough and bulky. Not a favorite of mine when it comes to looks. But hey, it looks great while putting out fires!

A Power House

Besides having all of the features that are needed for a fireman (backlight for visibility, analog display, and even a built-in compass), the G-Shock Mens Mud Master GG-1000-1A5CR is also a long-lasting watch.  G-Shocks are built to last and built to withstand everyday wear. Go with the Mud Master if you are a long time fan of the Casio brand and enjoy a tough, rugged watch.

Top Features

  • Accurate, easy to read, dial
  • 5 daily alarms
  • Shock, water and mud resistant
  • G-Shock design

Marathon WW194003

Simple, yet so intricate at the same time.

One of the highlights of the Marathon WW194003 is the tritium gas tubes that illuminate without batteries. This is an excellent feature for a firefighter because you never have to worry about the light going out.

The Marathon is also designed for general infantry. So it’s self-explanatory when it comes to the durability of this timepiece. . . What makes the Marathon even better is the mechanical movement that lies within the watch. Why it may not be the best for taking a pulse, the movement runs without batteries, so again, you do not have to worry about the time turning off either.

No Batteries Needed

The Marathon WW194003 General Purpose Mechanical made today’s list because of the fact that no batteries are needed. It is a high-quality, Swiss-made watch with features that are typically found on more expensive watches.

The 34mm case is a great size and looks good on any wrist. Choose from multiple colorways to ensure you get the watch that fits your style the best.

Top Features

  • Self-winding, mechanical movement *(may be a con for those who want a ticking hand. Mechanical movements have a steady “sweeping” movement)
  • Nice sized, 34mm fiber shell case
  • Tritium, self-illuminating dial
  • Nylon military strap for comfort

Marathon WW194009SG

Yes, this is another Marathon watch on the list. It is another great choice for firefighters.

Similar to the Marathon WW194003 in design, yet more affordable. This watch is PERFECT for those who love the Marathon name and design but do not want to break the bank.

The main qualities that are different in the Marathon WW194009SG model are a quartz movement, MaraGlo technology and yeah, that’s about it. So if Marathon watches are appealing, you won’t go wrong with either model.

Affordable and High Performance

Marathon watches are built for US government watches. So perfect if you are a federal firefighter. If not, it is still a pretty interesting pickup! You will not be let down by the timekeeping. It is very accurate and ticks at a great rate. The durability is exactly the same as the Marathon WW194003 and also glows without batteries. However, instead of tritium, this model uses MaraGlo.

MaraGlo is a strong, non-nuclear paint that enables the dial to light up in even the darkest of lighting. Even in the pitch black! When compared to tritium it is pretty similar. Personally, I prefer the tritium ( it is a bit stronger and easier to view). But MaraGlo will not let you down.

Top Features

  • Amazingly affordable price
  • MaraGlo technology for a bright, easy to see dial in the dark
  • Strong, 34mm fiber shell case
  • Analog display with 2 timescales

Aqua Force Firefighter Dive Watch

This is a great watch to end the review with. It is made for a firefighter! The design makes a perfect gift for any hardworking, dedicated firefighter who loves their job.

It would be hard to see a firefighter open this watch as a gift and not let out a laugh. One thing to note. This is not the BEST performing watch. It gets the job done, but the beauty lies in the design.

47mm stainless steel case with a black and red rotating bezel give the watch a dive watch look. Because of the large case size, it is suggested to purchase for those with bigger wrists.

The dial itself is black with a symbol in the middle that reads “firefighter” and has a fire hydrant and fire ladder featured beside the words. So definitely a watch for the proud firefighter who displays their passion on a daily basis.

Firefighter Design

For what it is, the Aqua Force Firefighter Dive Watch is a great choice. The quartz movement functions properly, only losing a few seconds per day. Being that this watch is the most affordable on the review. It is easy to see why some features may not be as great.

If firefighter looks outweigh the features and functionality of the timepiece you are looking for; then the AquaForce is probably for you.

Top Features

  • Designed for firefighters
  • Water resistant up to 50 meters
  • Bright red second hand (great for taking a pulse)
  • Luminous hands and dial

Our List of the Best G-Shock Watches by Casio

Best casio g-shock watch

With a focus on creating the indestructible, Casio began designing the first G-Shock watch in 1983. These watches are close to indestructible in adventures on land or water,  with one even beating the Guinness World Record title for the heaviest vehicle to drive over a watch.

But which G-Shock Casio watch is best for you? Read our guide to find out.

best g-shock watches

Top Five Best G-Shock Watches

To start off this list, we want to give you a bit of a spoiler alert. In our opinion, the Casio Sport Watch is the best G-Shock Casio watch. This is based on its amazing durability combined with its hard to beat price. Read more about the Casio Sport Watch and our other favorites below.

Casio Sport Watch

ThisCasio Sport Watch is an incredible example of Casio’s shock resistant watches. It has a 48.5-millimeter resin case that has a mineral dial window to keep digital display safe. The rectangular dial has an afterglow EL backlight. With a stopwatch, auto calendar, and more, this watch has many great features for an incredible price. Like most of the Casio watches, this one is water resistant up to 660-feet. That allows for rugged wear on land as well as water.

This Casio Sport Watch is beloved and trusted by many in the military. It is also incredibly cheap and incredibly durable. With great visibility and many features, there are few who can deny that this watch is about too good to be passed up.

Potential Negatives

The watch can be a bit hefty to some and the buttons on the side could be a bit difficult to manipulate.

Casio GA 100-1A1 Military Series Watch

This Casio GA 100A1 Military Series Watch will work for any job or activity but will work especially well for hard-core athletes and those in the military. It has a flexible resin band and buckle closure. The display face is digital with an analog display. It has an LED light and afterglow. The watch also features a calendar with the day, date, and month—pre-programmed to go until 2099. The watch allows for time in 29 time zones. It’s also water resistant up to 200 meters. Along with multiple features, like a stopwatch and battery life that will last you years, this watch is incredibly durable. It will serve you in whatever capacity you need it to for a long time to come.

Potential Negatives

Many reviewers dislike that it is just about impossible to see the analog time without perfect lighting. This is a good thing if the person wearing the watch does not want their location known, because it doesn’t light up. However, other reviewers say the watch is still reflective, so stealth will be an issue regardless.

Casio Shock Resistant Black Resin Sport Watch

If you are wanting a sleeker, yet subtle version of Casio’s watches, the Casio Shock Resistant Black Resin Sport Watch is a great option. This watch has the more laid back appearance of a watch to wear to work with all the durability and shock resistance to take with you to the Olympics. This watch provides many great features: a stopwatch that can measure down to 1/100 of a second for the first sixty seconds, a multi-function alarm, and an auto calendar that is pre-programmed until 2039. Water resistant up to 660-feet, this watch is great for athletes on water as well as land.

The digital display is protected by a mineral dial window. The oval/square-like case is resin and has a diameter of 45-millimeters. The watch color is a snazzy black with a bit of gray. Again, this is not the flashiest watch, but it has a bit more emphasis placed on class rather than rugged, tough, durability the others focus on emanating.

Finally, the price is absolutely unbeatable. There’s not much more to say on that besides the fact that if you’re looking for a good, quality watch you can easily afford, this will probably be the winner.

Potential Negatives

It can be a bit difficult to manipulate the buttons on this watch as well.

Casio Master of G Stainless Steel Solar Watch

If you want to do anything from going scuba diving to climbing a mountain without breaking your watch, the Casio Master of G Stainless Steel Solar Watch is your best bet. Also known as the Rangeman, this watch is the definition of an adventurer’s watch. It has a slew of great features, including five alarms, sunrise and sunset dates, and a stopwatch. However, one of the greatest features is that it’s solar powered. Hiking across the country? The last thing you want to worry about is a charger and you won’t have to. With some sun, it’ll stay in tip-top shape.

For many reasons, this is a great and reliable companion for those who need durability in their life. Other incredible features include a digital compass, altimeter, barometer, thermometer, calendar with the day, date and month, MB6 atomic timekeeping, and it is water resistant to 660 feet. The case is stainless steel with a diameter of 5.3 centimeters. It has a black band and black bezel with bits of red and gray.

Potential Negatives

Overall, this watch is highly loved by reviewers but there are some things people may not love about this watch. It’s relatively cumbersome. If you’re thinking about investing in this watch, make sure the size and weight won’t bother you. Another thing is that your watch may take your temperature if you’re wearing it, not exactly the temperature of the air around you. If you’re aware of the features of this watch and comfortable with the weight, this should be a great choice.

Casio G-Shock Men’s GG-1000-1A5CR

This Casio G-Shock Men’s GG-1000-1A5CR is a great example of Casio’s rugged, durable design. With an analog and digital display, protected by a mineral dial window, this watch has a 5.2-centimeter diameter resin case. The band is also resin and closes with a buckle clasp. The beige and black color of the watch is perfect for anyone who may want to keep it inconspicuous.

This watch is also mud resistant so you can go crazy on wild, muddy adventures out in nature. Being a companion to the adventurer as Casio’s brand has continued to be, this is a solid option for anyone needing a sturdy watch that has great features. Some of these features include an LED backlight, water resistance up to 660-feet, full auto-calendar, alarms, alert for low battery, thermometer, compass, and more.

The face of the watch has very clear features, including largely pronounced lettering and hands for the analog display. With Neobrite, the hands and markers of the watch are easier to see.

Potential Negatives

The display is a bit difficult to read because of the lighting. The watch also needs to be taken off the wrist for a few minutes before trying to get an accurate temperature reading.

Guide to Selecting the Best Casio G-Shock Watch

These rough and tough watches can become your right-hand man considering how useful and long-lasting they can be. Therefore, it’s important that you take into consideration some things you might want to factor in before purchasing what you think is the best Casio G-Shock for you.

Features: The More the Merrier or Short and Sweet

The best thing about Casio’s watches, besides their durability, is that they are stocked with features. These can include how many alarms you’re able to set, a thermometer, a compass, digital and analog displays, and many more. How many features and the quality of those features will affect the price. So, which are important to you? Do you want many features in the first place or will they make the watch too complicated? These are all important questions that should be answered before buying a watch—especially a Casio watch.

Your Intent

Similar to discussing features, there are many options for what you want your watch to do for you. Are you an athlete who wants durability over everything? Are you an explorer who needs to know where you are all the time and is reliant on solar power to keep your watch going? Are you in the military, where all of the features will be helpful but you also need your watch to be subtle, non-reflective and with no light so that your position won’t be given away? There’s a lot to think about with Casio. As many watches they have, catered to so many areas, make sure you’re getting the one that suits your needs because with this brand, it would really be a waste not to.

Casio is a Japanese multinational consumer electronics and commercial electronics manufacturing company. Along with watches, they also produce instruments, calculators, and more. Founded in 1946, Casio became well known for producing innovative wristwatches. They were one of the first companies to produce watches that displayed time in different time zones. Suunto Traverse Alpha Review: A True Utilitarian Watch for Outdoor Enthusiasts

Suunto Traverse Alpha Review

As a watch snob, I tend to gravitate towards the appeal of traditional mechanical movements and pure aesthetics in regards to watches.  The utility side of the timepieces generally takes the back seat.

Well, today is different, as we review a utilitarian watch that has great appeal for fans of the great outdoors.

For this review, we will be taking an in-depth look at the Suunto Traverse Alpha.

Suunto Traverse Alpha: At a Glance

To be honest, I’m quite familiar with the Suunto brand and their line of sports and smartwatches. However, I’ve never heard of Suunto Traverse Alpha until recently. The Traverse series has managed to grab my interest because Suunto implemented many features, accessibility options, and extra modes for a fairly affordable price.

Before we get to the meat of this Suunto Traverse Alpha review, let’s first take a look at its key specifications.

First Impressions

The Suunto Traverse Alpha is a tough-looking piece and I expected no less from a tactical watch. The watch itself feels extremely durable. The stainless steel bezel feels very solid and the nylon strap gives the impression that it’s not going to tear anytime soon.

As for the look of the watch, I love the fact that it looks rather simple but still looks handsomely good on the wrist. I got plenty of compliments from people on a daily basis. It’s not the most flashy watch but its simple, tactical look definitely did the Traverse Alpha a favor.

On top of its excellent looks, it certainly feels like a watch that I can reliably wear once the going gets rough.

Durability

While the watch doesn’t look like much at first glance, the Traverse Alpha is actually a fairly durable watch. This is, of course, a very important factor to consider if you want a watch that will help you brave the great outdoors.

This makes sense because the watch is designed with military applications in mind.

After wearing the watch for a couple of months now, I have nothing but good things to say about the Traverse Alpha when it comes to durability. I’ve worn it outdoors under rain and snow, in temperatures from 10 up to 100 degrees and I’ve experienced no problems with it.

The watch face is outfitted with sapphire glass and does a great job of keeping the watch scratch-free. Plus, the textile band is made mostly from nylon which makes it extremely sturdy. The only complaint I have about the strap is that it tends to gather dirt and moisture. If you’re always outdoors, it won’t take long for the strap to become a dirt, sweat, and moisture magnet. Needless to say, the strap becomes real stinky over time.

You may opt for the silicone band which is not as sturdy as nylon but it’s still plenty durable and can be submerged in water.

Speaking of water, the Traverse Alpha is water-resistant up to 100 meters and can handle heights up to nearly 10,000 meters. This makes the watch ideal even in some of the most extreme conditions.

Basic Features

The Traverse Alpha features a digital face, so if you are looking for a mechanical timepiece, you better look elsewhere. The watch is designed by Suunto which is a company that specializes in Finnish military hardware. With that said, you can use either the standard 12-hour clock or the 24-hour military specification.

The most basic display of the watch is presented without configuring any of the buttons on either side of the face. By default, the watch displays the date in the topmost portion, the time in the middle, and the sunrise/sunset on the bottom. The built-in sunrise/sunset counter should come in handy for hunting, camping, and trail running as it gives you the right information about the best times to set up camp or return to the vehicle.

Advanced Features

What makes the Traverse Alpha a utilitarian watch is definitely the advanced features.

It’s essentially a hunting/fishing sports watch with military specs. Thus, it’s not surprising that it hosts plenty of advanced features. You’ve got the basic sports watch features such as chronograph, altimeter, and compass. Based on my experience, these basic features work well as advertised.

The watch also comes with a lunar tracking feature to help fishing enthusiasts identify the ideal fishing times. The Traverse Alpha also features a fairly reliable and versatile GPS function. The GPS enabled me to track many activities from marking trail running paths to animal locations for hunting. You may also use the GPS to mark dangerous or restricted zones that should be avoided.

I highly recommend that you download Suunto’s Movescount app (iOS, Android) as it allows you to generate heat maps for charting routes for running, hiking, and hunting. The app will also let you access the more intimate details about your activities such as your steps and running speed. The Movescount is a very robust app that brings out the full potential of the Traverse Alpha.

The aforementioned chronograph will also track steps and distance, and the altimeter/barometer can give warnings of bad weather.

For sure, this is not your Pop’s sports watch and the advanced features can be quite intimidating and confusing for the casual user. There’s a bit of learning curve for using the watch, especially when accessing the advanced features. With that said, it’s highly recommended that you spend some time reading the manual and the supplementary online instructions.

Google Earth Integration

To expand on the advanced features of the Traverse Alpha, one of the best features of the watch is that you can easily transfer data to and from Google Earth.

Most outdoor enthusiasts use Google Earth for scouting key locations such as water sources, meadows, potential bedding areas, and more. However, when you actually trek into the area, such key locations can be quite difficult to spot. The Traverse Alpha takes away the guessing game by actually letting you mark the locations which you can view later in real-time.

This saves you hours upon hours of scouting.

On the other hand, once you find a good spot to set up a trail camera, you can mark that location as a point of interest (POI), label it accordingly, and easily upload those coordinates over to Google Earth. Once you get home, you can check the coordinates using Google Earth and gain a better picture of the location.

Connectivity and Accuracy

Although the Suunto Traverse Alpha is not exactly a traditional smartwatch, it might just be the smartest non-traditional smartwatch that you can buy.

The watch features GPS and Bluetooth connectivity. For the GPS, the watch connects to both GPS and GLONASS. The watch is fairly accurate as far as GPS connectivity is concerned but it comes at the cost of battery life.

The Bluetooth works flawlessly but as you might expect, running the watch alongside the Movescount smartphone app can drain the battery quickly.

As you might expect from a watch with military applications in mind, the timekeeping is very accurate. GPS-related functions such as step tracking also benefit from the Traverse Alpha watch’s accuracy. However, the weather alerts and sunrise/sunset tracker are more susceptible to interference which generally results in spotty accuracy.

If I have complaints, one would have to be with the fact that the time zones don’t change automatically. There are also cases where GPS acquisition is very slow.

Comfort

For a tough, utilitarian watch, I didn’t have that much expectation when it comes to comfort. However, I was pleasantly surprised that the watch offers a decent amount of comfort. It weighs about 75 grams which are roughly in the same average weight as a traditional men’s watch. Even after long periods of wearing the watch, it never felt heavy at all.

As I have mentioned earlier, the nylon strap can and will accumulate dirt and moisture. When it does happen, wearing the watch gives you a soggy feeling that I am personally not comfortable with. If you are buying the watch straight from Suunto’s website, you have the option to get it with silicone straps which offer better comfort overall.

Pricing

Suunto offers plenty of watches at premium price points. Many of their products range from $600 to $1,000. Fortunately, the Traverse Alpha is one of the more affordable Suunto watches that you can buy.

It’s far from a luxury watch, so the looks and the price definitely reflects that. For under $400, you get a tough as nails watch that provide a wide range of features for outdoor enthusiasts. Other tactical watches with similar specs from other brands will easily cost you about $600.

The Traverse Alpha strikes a great balance of value and price. It’s a good place to start if you’re looking for a reasonably-priced outdoor-centric watch.

Should You Buy the Suunto Traverse Alpha?

Again, this is not a casual sports watch. It was designed with military applications in mind, which means that it has features and functions that are far above than that of a traditional sports watch. There’s a minor learning curve, but once you get around it, any camper, hiker, hunter, or runner is in for a treat.

Whenever I hit the trail, the Traverse Alpha goes with me.

It has elevated itself as a crucial part of my regular outdoor activities. It is durable, reliable, rich in features, and reasonably priced. What more can you ask for?

Wittnauer Watch Review

Wittnauer Watch Review

Wittnauer has a long history in the watchmaking world. Beginning over a hundred years, this brand has had its ups and downs in popularity. At their beginning, Wittnauer watches and instruments were used for flight, war, and adventure. Wittnauer instruments were even featured in Amelia Earheart’s solo flight across the Atlantic in 1932. Through many changes, they’ve continued to stay afloat and currently provide quite a few very exciting pieces, both beautiful and useful.

Wittnauer Watch Review

Reliable and Active Pieces

Wittnauer watches were known for their ability to create reliable pieces that fit a time full of innovation, exploration and even war. They still produce many watches that are great for those who are active and those who simply need a reliable, attractive watch. We are going to look at a few watches that highlight some utilitarian watches that Wittnauer produces.

Wittnauer Black Dial Watch WN3003

This WN3003 watch is a beautiful stainless-steel chronograph that shows how Wittnauer can create both beautiful and functional watches. The analog display has quartz movement and is protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire glass. The bracelet is faceted and has a double-press deployment closure. The watch has subtle, beautiful features, with a gunmetal sunray dial, luminous markers, and luminous hands. The watch is water resistant to 50 meters.

Reviewers love that this piece has the appearance of a luxury watch because, while it is quite luxurious, it is also quite cheap. This watch, with its slick silver and black contrasts, can be dressed up or down easily. With the extremely affordable price of this watch, you can enjoy wearing it out and about. Terror at the idea of losing a much more expensive brand’s watch, like Rolex, can often negate the fun of wearing it. With this watch, you have the feel and look of luxury while paying very little for it.

Wittnauer Mens WN1002

The Wittnauer Mens WN1002 is a traditional, rustic piece. The rose-gold, leather and black combined provides an earthy, natural feel to this watch. The strap is a brown crocodile leather and the dial is a beautiful gunmetal sunray. The skeleton hands are luminous and have a white accent. Featuring a day and date window, the display is protected by scratch-free sapphire crystal and rose-gold ion plated stainless steel 42mm case.

Overall, this is a gorgeous watch with beautiful detail. Product pictures do not do this beautiful watch justice.

Most people seem to adore this watch as an every-day piece for casual wear. This is not a watch to be worn to a black-tie dinner, but it is still eye-catching and will gain quite a bit of attention. The uniqueness of its design and color-coordination is a big draw for this watch. You are not going to be seeing many of them around.

Wittnauer WN3011

This Wittnauer WN3011is a unique watch that truly draws the eye to it. Looking ready for any adventure you could throw at it, this is a watch you can wear for any occasion. The chronograph is in a dark black ceramic with rose-gold finish accents. The dial is black, and the watch has a double-press deployment closure. The sapphire glass will protect it from scratches and harm. The markers and hands are distinctively luminous, and the watch features a calendar box. The watch’s movement is Japan quartz. The watch is also water resistant up to 50 meters.

This watch seems truly luxurious. The ceramic black is extremely attractive, and the rose-gold touches illuminate the face. This is a watch for anyone in just about any setting. Regardless of where you wear it, the watch will gain attention.

Bold and Beautiful

Something that becomes very apparent the moment you investigate Wittnauer watches is the fact that they have quite a collection of brilliant formal watches. With Wittnauer’s low prices, an appealing factor of this brand is the unique pieces you can get without shelling out a lot of money. We’re going to look at some of the more attention-grabbing pieces.

Wittnauer WN3013

If we were looking for attention-grabbing, nothing else will quite meet that description like the Wittnauer WN3013. This watch is anything but subtle and plain. In fact, its almost as if it has something to prove.

This watch is stainless steel with the dial being silver toned with a crystal pave setting. The strap is stainless steel with stones spreading out from the 44mm case onto the strap part of the way around it. It uses Japan quartz for movement and the dial window is protected with Hardlex.

Again, this is a gorgeous watch. With the wrong outfit or setting, though, this watch could go from attention-grabbing to a little bit gaudy. Reviews about this watch are glowing. No one can believe that this stunner is as cheap as it is. In general, it is a well-liked watch. While it is a bit dramatic, who doesn’t need a bit of drama in their life?

Wittnauer WN3057

A little bit calmer but no less classy is the Wittnauer Wn3057. This watch is a strange bird but in a great way. The round 44mm case is black with little crystals planted around the rim and inside the face of the watch. The contrast and almost surprising element of the sparking detail is what makes this watch so distinctive. Glancing past the watch, you think you are looking at a beautiful but relatively basic black stainless-steel watch with a white face. After a moment, you finally absorb the fact that you are looking at many crystals.

This is a great watch for both dressier events and professional settings.

Wittnauer Mens WN3037

While there is still a lot of bling in this Wittnauer WN3037 watch, the style is unique. With 284 hand-set crystals on this tonneau-shaped case, this chic watch is strangely understated. In the right setting, this watch will be the perfect accessory for an elegant event or a night on the town.

The band is stainless steel and crystals along the case stand in gorgeous contrast against the black brushed sunray dial.

Reviewers love this watch and, while it is meant for men, women find the watch to work well for them as well. Overall, this is a great piece that highlights the cheap but versatile, classy, and eye-catching watches Wittnauer is making.

History of Wittnauer

Wittnauer was founded by Albert Wittnauer, an immigrant from Switzerland who came to the U.S. in the late 19the century as a teenager. He began to work with his brother-in-law, who imported Swiss watches. Helped by his brother, Albert decided there was a need for timepieces with the high-quality of Swiss watches but locally made to save on money.

The brand was established in 1885 and Wittnauer movements were made by Swiss firms on their behalf at first. They began small as a family business but grew very quickly as the world changed. Wittnauer produced instruments and watches for aviation units in World War I when durability and accuracy were needed more than ever.

They also provided timepieces and instruments to those who would change the world. As we mentioned previously, Amelia Earheart was one such explorer who utilized pieces provided by Wittnauer. She wasn’t the only one. In fact, Wittnauer is known for providing products to adventurers and explorers who would go down in history. Neil Armstrong wore a Wittnauer during his Gemini 8 mission. This brand was used widely for a variety of things but at the forefront was adventure and exploration both on land and in the air.

For most of the 20th century, Wittnauer kept its acclaimed reputation. Sadly, they came across budget issues and were bought by Bulova in 2001. While popularity has certainly declined in recent decades, Wittnauer is still producing quality watches that are reminiscent of the days when they were literally keeping track of history as it happened.

Final Thoughts

Wittnauer seems to be a brand that has withstood many a bump in the road. This brand has been around for a very long time. Like any company that has existed for over a hundred years, there are bound to be issues, ups, downs, and confusion as it enters modern times. The brand surviving two world wars and contributing to monumental moments in history proves its worth. But, a little more important than its history is what Wittnauer’s products look like today.

Both Wittnauer’s formal and more utilitarian watch options may not be top-of-the-line but they are good watches. They are also well-crafted and have a truly original style. The incredible pricing of most of the watches is also a huge factor. There are very few watches available on the market with such a long history, beautiful pieces, and affordable prices. If you are looking to invest your money into a top-tier watch, this is not going to be the best option. However, if you just want a high quality, beautiful watch that has a great history, Wittnauer will have something to suit your needs.

Tsovet Watch Review

Tsovet Watch Review

Tsovet is a company that is practically an infant in comparison to wristwatch brands that have dominated markets for nearly a century.  However, does that make it any less of a worthy brand? Everyone has to start somewhere and Tsovet seems to be starting strong by providing high-quality watches that are actually affordable.

Tsovet Watch Review

Cheap and Will Keep

Tsovet’s designs are extremely versatile but one of the greatest things about the brand is that they have really attractive watches that are also affordable. In order to understand whether or not you should commit to pursuing a brand, you need to see what their price range is and what the quality within those price ranges are like.

Tsovet Men’s JPT-NT42

The JPT-NT42is a prime example of Tsovet’s ability to bring attention to the greatness of focusing on the basics. One of the cheaper options available, this watch is great for anyone who needs a reliable, modern, and classic wrist watch. Comfort and durability are a main focus of this Tsovet product and this seems to provide that. The black leather band contrasts beautifully with the 42mm stainless-steel case. The hands and markers are luminous for easy visibility. Overall, this watch is great for anyone who has a lot going on and needs a straightforward and reliable watch. For the cheap price, this watch is a great example of how Tsovet can meet a lot of different needs at a good price.

Leaning toward a casual look, this watch can be dressed up. However, I feel that this watch is going to be best for those on the move. There are a lot of dressier, more sophisticated options by Tsovet. As it is, this watch handles daily wear and tear well and looks good too.

Tsovet Men’s SVT-CN38

Beautifully minimalist, this SVT-CN38 is a great example of how smaller details make Tsovet’s watches shine. The leather band is attractively casual with eye-catching contrast stitching. The 38mm case is stainless steel in the very typical rounded fashion of the Tsovet watches.

The details along the face of the watch are the most intriguing aspect of the watch. The numbers are made to be a bit larger and quite distinctive. The watch is overall pretty uniform, but one aspect breaks away from the general tan and laid-back vibe of the watch: the slender hands in certainly are stark blue. At some angles, they just look black but when the light catches it, the bold blue adds a fun component to the watch.

This is the type of watch you could see your father wearing, but with a twist to make it a bit more modern and bolder. If you are looking for an everyday watch for a good price that has some unique components added to it, the SVT-CN38 will do the trick.

Tsovet SVT-SC38

The Tsovet SVT-SC38 is a beautiful watch and very affordable. The gorgeous silver with a touch of blue creates a simple yet very appealing aesthetic.  This watch is a really great example of how Tsovet tends to use its simple, elegant design in various ways.

The stainless-steel case is 38mm. The movement is Swiss Quartz. The black, silver, white, and light blue colors come together to give a depth to the look of the watch. You don’t just gloss over it, your eyes are drawn into and linger on the subtle details. The bubble mineral crystal strap is also snazzy and adds more detail to the overall look of the watch. The style really can be worn more casually or dressed up. There’s a lot to recommend it and it’s a fantastic example of how Tsovet seems to produce affordable watches that are also beautiful.

Adventure and Class

A huge part of Tsovet’s brand is making independent and superior watches that are reminiscent of the freedom of adventure. Tsovet watches are made for travel and excitement. In order for us to better understand the brand of Tsovet, we should look at some of the watches that would work best for the adventures we’d want to take them on.

Tsovet Chronograph Watch JPT-TS44

This JPT-TS44 is one of Tsovet’s more popular watches and for good reason. It is a versatile, classy chronograph watch that is made for the active adventurous person who is ready to take it for a spin. The band is black leather and the round case is 44mm. The time markers are a beautiful and bold blue so that when you glance down at your watch, you can easily see the time. Likewise, the hands are also bold and easily visible.

Overall, this is a sturdy watch that will serve its user well. With its darker and unique features, this watch will be relatively easy to dress up. This is a good Tsovet option for those who like to get a lot of information from their watch while also looking ready for a professional or classier event.

Tsovet Men’s SVT-RM40

The Tsovet Men’s SVT-RM40 is a great option for anyone who loves to look sleek while also being prepared for anything. This watch is a military-spec watch and it includes a stopwatch and date window feature. The round stainless-steel case is 40mm. The black leather band is adjustable.

This watch is really enjoyable to look at. The all black watch is offset by some lighter markers and hands. That way the time is relatively easy to view quickly.  This is definitely a watch you would want  if you were getting ready to travel and wanted a reliable, attractive watch to fit whatever occasion for which it was needed.

Tsovet JPT-CC38

This Tsovet JPT-CC38 is a traditional chronograph design that looks like something you’d see straight out of a classic movie. Many of Tsovet’s pieces are actually created in a vintage fashion and this is a great example of that style. Like Tsovet’s other watches, this watch is beautifully simplistic but effective. The all-black watch has a stark white face that helps the hands and markers to stand out while still staying inconspicuous.

The watch has Miyota Chronograph Movement, protected with a stainless-steel case that is 38mm. As is typical of other watches in this brand, the JPT-CC38 is not flashy. However, the understated chronograph design provides a double-whammy of class and comprehensive.

This is the type of watch you can wear to a board meeting, a wedding, or even camping. Once again, Tsovet manages to create a watch that can be worn (and should be worn) in multiple settings. While the cost of this watch is a little more expensive than some of the other watches we’ve looked over, the price is still relatively good.

History and Interesting Facts

As mentioned before, Tsovet has not been around for very long at all. In fact, they’ve only been on the scene since being founded in 2008 by David Bonaventura. In comparison to other watch brands we’ve reviewed, like Hamilton (which has been in existence for not a decade but a century) Tsovet is brand new. However, they’re making strides in their own, unique way.

The Tsovet brand philosophy is inspired by the idea that their watches can be representative of personal journeys. Rather than just being fashion pieces, Tsovet wants their watches to inspire their wearers. They are also inspired by objects of some type that has left behind an impression and then they incorporate that object into their designs. Along with utilizing inspired objects, they also incorporate vintage pieces.

So, Tsovet may not have an illustrious history spanning two world wars behind it. However, this brand has put forward a dedication to serving potential buyers with products that don’t need a history because they have a personality behind them.

In a few years, it is possible that Tsovet continues its upward trajectory and becomes a name with which many are familiar. Beyond beautiful designs and intriguing inspiration, Tsovet watches are also known to be extremely precise when it comes to time-keeping, which is a watch’s job anyhow.

Conclusion

Tsovet has many incredibly designed pieces that I can see being a good investment. Beyond the fact that they’re pretty to look at, they are also very affordable in comparison to other quality watch brands. They are also good watches. Their timekeeping is precise and reliable.

Affordability is not everything when it comes to watches. If you’re really short on cash and genuinely interested in rising brands like Tsovet, there is not much of a downside in purchasing one. That being said, if you do have more money to invest, there are a lot of really great watches that are more well known..

If you love the design and you relate to the product, there’s no question you should try to purchase it. However, it is worth considering other brands if you don’t relate too much to the product. The reviews for Tsovet are good and the product seems to be great for the price, but if you have a bigger budget, you will have a broader pool. That broader pool may have older designs that relate more to your aesthetic. Overall, with this brand name not being on the same level by half as something like Rolex’s, take your time to make sure there isn’t another brand at this level that will give you the best options available.

Rado Watch Review

Rado Watch Review

Rado watches are made well and have been consistently innovative since the brand’s origins over a hundred years ago. That being said, are they worth their generally high cost? Looking through some of the more historic, innovative, and appealing designs, we see that they are certainly worth it to those who can truly appreciate Rado’s aesthetic and novelty.

Rado Watch Review

Making Strides

The DiaStar

Among their innovations is the creation of the first scratch-resistant watch. This watch was revolutionary and a great treasure. Called the DiaStar, this watch used hard metal and sapphire crystal—common now but not  at the time. Overall, it was a flawless, scratch-less piece that could be worn for years and still look brand new.

Currently, you can still purchase a version of the DiaStar, a classic piece that provides the protected and retro feeling you’d want from a classic Rado design.

This DiaStar watch is almost all silver with a stainless-steel case and strap. The analog dial, however, is black with silvery, luminescent hands and diamond hour markers that provide the subtle class that makes Rado the brand it is.

At the 6-o’clock position, you can find the date and day. The 35mm oval case is eye-catching and unique. The window, of course, is sapphire crystal. Last, but not least, the watch is water resistant to approximately 100-feet.

While the face is a bit smaller than what some may prefer, this watch is a classic and it will last. The great thing about Rado is that quality is pretty much a guarantee.

Rado V10K

Do you know what’s even better than being known for creating a scratchless watch? Creating the hardest watch.

Many feel that other watch brands have surpassed Rado in relevance in recent years, matching in quality and better in price than this Swiss brand. However, very few argue that Rado was at the forefront of creating watches as close to impermeable as possible. One of the best examples of this is the Rado V10K watch, which was known as the hardest watch available.

The V10K has an incredibly unique and striking design. The band is rubber and the watch has quartz movement. But what makes it unique is how Rado made it so hard. The case is coated in high-tech diamond…. some of the hardest material on earth. It is an innovative design that made people’s jaws drop.

While the price is high, this piece is unique and a conversation starter. For those who love the design and appreciate its technology, this watch is a great investment. However, there are some who genuinely dislike the design and do not feel it adds much to their experience. Others love the fact that they can feel comfortable wearing such an expensive and high-end watch while playing their favorite sports, hiking, and just about anything else. Generally, with a purchase of a watch of a bigger brand at such a high cost, the buyer wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing the watch except to work or on special occasions. This watch, however, is made for anything you throw at it.

Entering the World of Ceramic

Rado R5.5 in Black

A truly signature part of Rado’s history is its use of high-tech ceramic. Rado perfected the use of ceramic in watches as both a way to make their products more durable and fashionable. Blowing up in the nineties, Rado began to make many watches using this material. Why? Ceramic is ten times harder and much lighter than gold. It’s also hypoallergenic.

One great example of Rado’s continued ceramic production is the Rado R5.5. With a distinctive square design, this watch is simple yet flawlessly chic. The ceramic case is 36mm and the quartz movement is protected with the sapphire crystal dial window. The hands are luminous, and a date window sits at the 3 o’clock marker.

While ceramic is so much harder than most other materials, it is not quite as waterproof as some. The watch can be resistant to water up to 99-feet but it’s advised that the wearer avoids submerging in water or showering with it.

Esenza Touch

With continued success in innovative technology, Rado kept its pattern into the 2000s. This time, they created the first portable and ceramic touch device through the Rado Esenza Touch.

This watch is elegant and fit for a lady…literally. This watch is designed for women and seeps elegance. With a simple swipe, this watch can be set easily. This version of the Esenza (the Jubile) is even more glamorous with over 60 diamonds framing the black dial. The diamonds aren’t so large that they immediately draw attention in a gaudy way, in fact, quite the opposite. The detail is magnificent.

The oval case is quite distinctive with sapphire crystal integrated for protection and to make it more beautiful. The bracelet closes with a titanium double-folding clasp that has a push button.

Again, the ceramic of this watch adds a level of protection and durability that many other fashionable watches don’t have.

Beauty and Brains

Original Golden Dial Watch

While many of Rado’s watches are on the more understated, classy side, Rado also has some very flashy pieces that will have all eyes on you. One such watch is one of Rado’s highest-rated watches, the Original Gold Dial. This may not be the most innovative watch of Rado’s, but it is certainly one of their best. With a lot of features in a compact space, The Golden Dial is a gorgeous piece.

The 43mm golden-plated stainless-steel case surrounds a classic circular face. It’s protected by sapphire crystal. Movement is Swiss automatic and the hour markers are diamond. At the 6 o’clock marker are the day and date display. This watch is water resistant up to 100-feet of water but discretion is advised!

With glowing reviews about this watch everywhere, there is little doubt it is a fan favorite. The gold is luminous and extremely eye-catching. Along with the looks, there is a lot of information fit compactly.

There are a lot of watch options that Rado provides. While this brand has a pretty distinct aesthetic, like this Gold Dial Watch, you can find a lot of different styles for a lot of different occasions.

Watches That Show What Rado is All About

Rado has been at the forefront of new watch technology for decades. If you want to own a watch from a brand that certainly has a strong footprint in the history of watchmaking, Rado is a good option. Again, its high price does set it apart from other brands. Currently, there are many watches of great quality and modern, innovative styles that are cheaper. However, Rado’s brand has stood the test of time and, to many, would be a proud piece to own.

History of Rado

Rado’s origins date back over a hundred years. Always known for their style and innovative designs, this brand has seen many landmarks in its long life. Rado began as a collaboration among three brothers in 1917. Working inside their Swiss home at first, the Schlup & Co. watchmaking factory, which would soon start the Rado brand, began very small but grew quickly. In the 1940s, Schlup and Co. was one of the largest manufacturers of watch movements.

Rado was born in the fifties when Schlup & Co. started to sell watches under that brand name. Rado quickly gained traction. Recognized across the world, Rado started its innovative pattern with water-resistant models.

For the next few decades, Rado produced quality watches known distinctly for its classy, unique designs. Along with Rado’s unique aesthetic, it was also known for consistently producing innovative designs that changed watch expectations.

Overall, there is a lot to say positively about Rado. Their watches are gorgeous, to say the least. They have a long and intriguing history full of innovation. They are also relatively rare. You’re not going to see many Rado watches on the street. In fact, they only manufacture 500,000 a year.

Final Thoughts

Rado has incredible watches that are stylish, modern, and in some cases, retro. Their strong history in innovation makes it a brand that anyone would be proud to own. However, the question of whether the price is worth it, all depends.

From reviews and research, the worth of Rado seems to come down to whether or not you identify with the style and aesthetic that makes Rado so distinct. One watch that someone absolutely adored, another found “cheap.” Are they high quality? Absolutely. They are also fashionable. However, they may just not be your “cup-of-tea.”

In order to be sure that this watch will be worth it to you, make sure that you love the style and functions of the watch. Do you love the movement provided, the material it is made out of, and everything else? Another rewarding quality of owning a Rado is knowing that you are not going to be seeing them everywhere. They are comparably rare to other brands. Buying a Rado is an investment, and since they are expensive, make sure the investment is worth it to you. Regardless, down the line this brand will still be likely worth quite a bit of money. It may be smart to buy one of their better watches now as they’ll be worth more in the future.
