Ah, what a review we have today! Two brands that are highly regarded, and are some of the most well known in the watch and jewelry industry today. I am talking about the powerhouse watch brand Rolex and the jewelry turned to watch company, Cartier. Although Cartier is becoming more and more known for their high priced, luxury quartz watches; they still do not compare to Rolex.
The Rolex brand is one that will always be one of the tops in the watch community. Due to all of the history and great pride that Rolex puts into their watchmaking, it is the ultimate winner for today’s review.
Rolex is not the most expensive watchmaker to exist, and it is not the best. But the name in itself is popular amongst watch fanatics, rappers and really, anybody. The same can not be said for Cartier. Besides just popularity wise, Rolex is also A LOT more complex than Cartier. Rolex watchmakers produce masterpieces that are extremely accurate and beautiful. Cartier focuses on the luxury side of watchmaking and pretty much stops there…
Today, I will review the top watches by each brand, highlighting the best features and aesthetics of the particular watches. From there, I will show why Rolex is a better choice for ANY type of watch! (P.S: I am an extreme Rolex fan, not being biased or anything 😏) . So instead of saving the best for last, lets dive right into why Rolex is your golden ticket to watch paradise!
Easily one of the most classic watches by Rolex. The beautiful, durable and simply designed Rolex Submariner.
The Rolex Submariner was one of the first dive watches to ever hit the market. Whether you decide to purchase a vintage or a newer model (pictured above), you are sure to be happy with your timepiece.
The Submariner features a beautiful black dial with a perfect sized 40 mm case diameter. A ceramic, uni-directional bezel insert gives a great touch to match the black dial and compliment the polished stainless steel Oyster bracelet. To ensure you are never missing out on time, Rolex created a reliable 3135 caliber self-winding movement for the Submariner. If you do opt for the Submariner, remember, there is no classic Rolex cyclops to display the date. And if you go for the model 114060, there is no date in the dial.
Features that make this watch so durable include a water resistance up to 300 Meters, a strong screw down crown to prevent water from entering the watch and a deployment buckle clasp on the bracelet, which keeps the watch secure on the wrist.
A Classic Dive Watch
If simply designed, but somehow very handsome dive watches are your thing. Then I can not recommend a better watch for you. The Submariner is reliable, VERY durable and goes well with any attire that you decide to wear (casual or fancy). If there was any other dive watch that I would recommend, it would be the Rolex Sea Dweller! But for sake of my review, go with the Submariner! 😉
The Milgauss is a favorite amongst Rolex fans. Most of the design is classic and similar to a Rolex Datejust, with an exception within the dial…
The Milgauss looks like your average Datejust at first glance. Even the specs are pretty similar; the Scratch resistant sapphire crystal, handcrafted screw down crown, 40 mm stainless steel case and a black dial.
Two features that differentiate the Milgauss from other Rolex watches. The second hand is a bright orange lightning bolt. The watch was originally made for scientists in mind. So a signature lightning bolt was a must-have addition to this timepiece! Another innovative addition to the Milgauss is the anti-magnetic abilities within. The movement is not affected by magnetic pull due to advanced roadblocks put in to keep this from happening. The reason for this is because many scientists work around magnetic fields. So keeping accurate time while creating new inventions was something that was very important!
The technology that is used on the Milgauss is not a common piece in watches. This is a factor that makes it so unique and so it holds its value over time. So even if you are not an awesome scientist, this watch is definitely a conversation starter. (“Hey is your watch protected against magnetic fields? No, well mine is)!
The Daytona is the highest priced out of the Rolex watches that I have reviewed today. But for a very good reason, and it is ABSOLUTELY worth the price. (I wish I had one).
Within this masterpiece is an amazing 4130 Rolex caliber automatic movement. It is run with 44 Jewel movement and a VPH (vibrations per hour) of 28,800. A 72-hour power reserve that keeps the watch running longer. Other physical specs include a 40 mm stainless steel case, stainless steel adjustable bracelet, a beautiful black, ceramic dial and luminescent hands & hour markers.
The polishing of the DAYTONA is literally out of this world. But what truly makes it amazing is the precise accuracy of the movement that runs the Daytona. The Parachrom hairspring has exceptional qualities that make the watch extremely accurate. It is said to be ten times more accurate than a traditional hairspring.
Now it’s time to go over top watches by Cartier. The Ballon Bleu is a great watch to start with; due to the classic design and perfectly polished look.
The stainless steel case measures 41.5 mm, so a great size for any wrist. It is slightly larger than most Rolex classic pieces, (40mm), but it’s still a great look. Inside the white dial holds the Roman Numerals that give the timepiece a vintage look. A nice automatic piece keeps this watch ticking strong. Long time owners are content with the movement on the Cartier Ballon Bleu. The movement is not as regarded as any Rolex movement, but it definitely gets the job done.
A Classic Look
If you are into watches that are nice and simple, this may be a great fit. The stainless steel and white dial go great with the large, bold Roman Numerals. This is a watch that can go with any outfit from casual to the most formal business attire.
Now for a dive watch by Cartier.
42mm large case, up to 998 feet of water resistance and a clean, dark black dial are some differentiating features on the Cartier Dive Watch. The watch also comes stock with a black rubber band. That being said, this is one of the more durable watches by Cartier and is a great choice if durability is important to you.
Many other features resemble the Ballon Bleu. Which is why this watch is known and regarded for its diving abilities.
A Durable Dive Watch
Although I would personally refer any Rolex Dive Watch over the Cartier Dive, this is still a good watch (Rolex is just amazing). But there is no doubt that this watch is strong. You can be sure that it will last through any wear and tear, heck even a few drops in the toilet will be fine.
The Tank Solo by Cartier is probably one of the most popular watches by the brand.
Cartier is known for their square-shaped timepieces. I personally am not a huge fan of how the squared watches look on wrists, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. Many people DO LOVE these styles of watches (hence why they are one of the most popular watches by Cartier). The stainless steel case is 27.4 mm with a synthetic sapphire crystal. The Tank Solo is run on a quartz movement but is known to be pretty accurate. For the most part, the watch is a simple look. A white dial with large, black Roman numerals and a stainless steel case and band.
For Those Who Like Things Different
Most men’s watches come in the generic round case shape. So having the squared design is a unique touch to stand out from other watches. This is a great dress watch that can be worn with business casual or very formal attire. It is sure to get people talking and asking you about where you got your watch. Remeber, people are drawn to things that stand out. And the Tank Solo by Cartier does just that.
Hopefully, I made it clear today that both watchmakers are great brands who create reliable, and luxurious timepieces. When it comes down to what brand is MORE reliable, MORE durable and MORE luxurious; the ultimate winner is Rolex. Rolex is one of those household names that will always be known and regarded as one of the BEST watchmakers in the world! Cartier is more known for their fine jewelry rather than their timepieces.
If you opt for a Rolex, know that your watch will hold its value (if kept in good condition) and maintain its reliablilty throughout the duration of its watch life. The same can’t be said for Cartier. Why it may run for a long time, they are not built to last as long as a Rolex, and will not hold value like a Rolex. So if you need any more clarification than what I have said throughout this review, here you go for the last time. Rolex watches are a BETTER choice for prospective watch owners. They are around the same price and built with better materials.
At the end of the day, the choice is up to you. If you are truly in LOVE with the Tank Solo, go ahead and purchase it! Just make sure when you purchase a you buy it from a reliable source, like Amazon!
Happy shopping my watch friends!
